Interlaced chips? 24F??

I just want to clear up some confusion I have regarding these excellent cams

So, the chips are interline chips, meaning they can't ever actually scan a progressive frame?

When you shoot in 24f does the sensor scan at 48hz and just slap the two fields together? What if there is fast motion in the frame? will it cause artifacting?

the image is recorded from interlaced chips, yes... but 24f for all intense and purposes looks exactly like 24p... it is 24p.

The only real side effect is a slight hit to resolution when shooting 24f.

Looks the same, feels the same... is the same... jsut a different way of doing it.

but isnt each field recorded at a seperate time 1/48th of a second from eachother??

How does one create a "true" progressive image out of two video fields taken at seperate times, is what im asking

interpolation. Same way you do it in post but the canon does it in camera. It does it alot better than magic bullet or fieldskit.

We don't know how it works, Canon has never released the details. However, from viewing the footage in motion it would seem safe to say that no, the fields are not recorded at a different time. It's entirely possible that it's making its footage from just one field; that would account for the resolution drop, and then interpolating the remaining lines. Maybe it's doing some sort of intelligent interpolation using the "unused" field at 50% opacity or something, who knows? All we know is that Canon has never said what their process is, only that it makes progressive-scan footage from interlaced chips with a resolution drop from about 800 lines (in 1080i) down to about 600 lines (in 1080/24F).

Having just traded an XH-A1 for an HPX170, I can say that it's very hard to tell the two apart resolution-wise, probably next to impossible. When you get the footage into post though and start pushing colors, the Panny smokes the Canon, however I did LOVE the Canon and may pick up an XHA1s (what the A1 should have been initially) just for shoots that may require tape still.

well. at any rate, i was going to buy the a1 but the hpx170s progressive chips were too tempting lol
