Interesting times we live in. Looks like Canon might be a bit sooner to the game...

Than we thought.

This is all crazy. For the past few weeks I'm been practically wetting my pants with excitement about the release of the AF100. I can't wait to get one. Before it's even released it looks like Sony may have a sweet new camera as well and now Canon!?!? Of course its only a rumor but still...

Very interesting times that we live in.

1080p at 120 FPS is not technically possible out an HD-SDI port. The bandwidth isn't there. If it was a set of HD-SDI ports utilizing the 3GHD-SDI spec that would be possible. Most in the first rumour looks plausible on paper but it smells to me of being a manufacturered rumor just because it appears to ape the AF100 in too many ways.

Agreed. Would Canon really ditch their new XF line so quickly? If anything, if this camcorder is legit it will be in the 9K+

I don't think such a camera would come close to "ditching" the XF line. Small sensor video cameras will always have their place. My experience in trying to "lens-up" for the AF100 has made that very clear to me. The fast 10x zoom is gonna rule over the big sensor cams for a very long time. They will always have their place as a tool.

But you may be right about the $9k. Still, such a cam still has it's appeal over the $5k AF100 IMO.

Canon would have to develop a whole new CMOS chip for this camera. They will not be able to read a full (not line skip or pixel bin) 18MP sensor, downsample to 1080p at 24fps. If they did it with a current sensor you'd have 2 issues:

1. Gelatiness mess that would look similar to cell phone video
2. Heat, and lots of it.

Maybe Canon is working on a new downsampling method for this camera, but if they are going to try and take one of the still camera sensors and dump it into a pro body, I don't think their ready. Maybe in another 1-2 DSLR sensor generations, or they could go out and design a whole new sensor strictly for video. I don't see how it could possibly be any cheaper than Red at that point.

At the risk of repeating myself, the rumor engines + a host of new announcements right now are really intended to pre-empt the launch of the AGF100. As long as the lingering doubt of other possibilitles exists, people will not just jump right in for Panasonic's cam. I would definitely take it all with a grain of salt, especially where Canon is concerned. I wouldn't even be surprised if someone from the company itself leaked this as a strategic ploy. Confirmed release dates matter more to me, than speculation. It could be two years before we see the results of all of this, and at a price point which might be very disappointing for some here.

It took them years to produce the xf300 cms. hell I wouldn't expect to see something from Canon for three to five yrs. Or after the masses start

Honestly I don't think there's much in these rumors for Canon at least. Historically Canon's always been late to the game. Add in that Canon just released their XF300 and XF305 models...it just doesn't quite add up. The moment that Panasonic stamped an official release date on the AF100 my head turned.

Honestly, since RED just announced that EPIC is going into production, I wouldn't say it's impossible that Scarlet S35 is out by the second half of 2011.

So any rumors about a Canon or Sony camera don't matter to me.

I'm still going to get an AF100 and use it until I can buy a Scarlet S35.

Panasonic, Sony, and Canon have been coming out with new cameras for years. I would not be surprised at all if this rumour is true... Why not? They have all the engineers that they need to pull anything off.

We are so used to watching RED take a long time to develop their camera... Perhaps it takes a long time for RED because they have smaller teams, or because they are putting so much into their design and capability. If it takes long for them, that does not mean that the others cannot be faster.

To me, it comes down to specifications... If the president of the comany specs a camera with 7K, 200fps, and 35 stops of lattitude, then its the engineer's job to make it happen. It is just a matter of time, money and effort.

I welcome a Canon full-frame camera, and any other improvement by anybody (including a response from Panasonic) because it just helps me and everyone here to have access to great tools.

Cheers,
Paul Vicente

I hope it's not full frame. is that a typo from you? any dslr sensor for video put in a camcorder from canon should be aps-c
