Interesting Article on Obesity

That's all there is to it, folks, genetics has absolutely nothing to do with it. Tons of studies have proven this, including environmental and cross-cultural studies. One example: before the Communists were overthrown in Albania, there were practically no fat people in Albania - there were practically no cars in Albania, almost everyone walked everywhere, there was barely enough food do eat. Within 5 years after Communism was overthrown, there were more cars, people moved less, ate more, and the first fat then obese people appeared and spread... today they almost match the surrounding countries obesity statistics.

Do you links to any of these studies you reference? You mention scientific studies but only provide anecdotal evidence.

I'm going to disagree and say that genetics has something to do with obesity.

consequences such as?

Paying elevated insurance premiums for coverage, to reflect increased risk to the insurer, for one thing (in the context of a nationalized system, that is; I think private insurers already charge extra premiums or even deny coverage, to people with sufficiently advanced weight gain as it is).

i respectfully agree.

That's nice... but I have no idea why you posted a long description of yourself. You aren't fat and it seems to happen naturally. Good for you. It doesn't make the health issues any less prevalent, or the common causes less common.

And ugafan, I'm sure you understand that obesity can lead to a large host of medical and quality of life issues. It's not hard information to get a a hold of.

I think a vast majority of people think they are in much better shape than they really are.

One is either in shape or not. There is no middle.

Being healthy is a product of so many areas

How one eats, what one eats, how often one eats ....

Cardio activity and frequency

Muscle and strength

Physical

Mental

Spiritual

Emotional

Sress Management

Ask yourself ? Are you really healthy ?

There are people that are physical specimens but mental and spiritual wrecks on the verge of a stroke.

True health is way beyond the foods and activty levels.

But on a liner note ? How one can let themsleves go physically is a mystery to me.

Depends... my insurance is provided through my employer, and my premiums are the same as my coworkers. Some are in ridiculously good shape, others aren't (cough cough editors cough cough :)). I see no reason why it needs to be that way. I forget which ones, but I do know that some states heavily restrict the difference that insurance companies are allowed to charge in premiums... the logic being that it's unfair to charge a heavily overweight smoker more than a marathoner. I think that's just crap. Some people have legitimate conditions that prevent them from losing weight... but most people don't (and for the record, this is from someone who is a good 35-40lbs overweight).

It would be awesome if more insurance companies charged lower premiums or gave discounts (or were allowed to) as an incentive to get people to take responsibility of their health and take better care of themselves.

There is a smokers' tax in the sense that tobacco products are fairly heavily taxed above and beyond the usual state sales taxes (not enough really, but hey...)

There's periodic talk of a 'fat tax' in the form of taxes on processed junk-type foods but it's usually shouted down, probably in part by people who enjoy junk food and in part by lobbyists for the manufacturers of junk food (well, and to some degree by the dittohead-types for whom an effort to encourage healthy diet is obviously cover for a communist takeover of America, removal of In God We Trust from the currency, and mandatory abortions for everybody whether they want them or not...)

Guys, how is this not a completely political thread? You're talking about communists, government takeover, taxes, etc...

Find a way to drop the politics or the thread gets locked.

being a really fat guy myself, my biggest problem is choosing what's convenient over what is healthy. i wish there was a place around here that offered low cost healthy meals that i could pick up at a drive-thru. pretty much the only healthy options i ever see are salads. blah.

Convenient vs. healthy is tough. Luckily I'm on a show where it's easy to find healthful food. There's also plenty of junk food, but it's ignore-able.

Some companies only stock the junk food. Coincidentally those tend to be the projects which are high-pressure and stressful for everybody. The combination = fatter crew.

It comes down to discipline

Not to suggest you do not have it ....

But the eating habits cannot be dictated by the fastfood restaurants around town

One must make meals in advance and plan accordingly.

Although that's true, it's also important to realize how much of an issue that can be for people who aren't already trained towards certain behaviors, by themselves or otherwise. Ignoring convenience and taking in less energy is completely against biological nature. It's possible to overcome, but the human mind isn't all-powerful, and it is still a fight. Some people don't have the time or aren't willing to allocate the time to take care of preparing meals. Some people don't care enough. Which is fine.

I also need to point out again that fat and obese are different, and a little fat really is healthy. Athletic isn't the peak of humanity and a lot of people are built stocky. So it's important to not be overly anti-fat, to understand that there are differences. I disagree that there is a clear line between in shape and not, or that such a distinction necessarily has to be the goal.

The other day I heard my girlfriend's mom tell her daughters, "Remember girls: once on the lips, forever on the hips," as they were asking to eat ice cream for dessert. They're in 6th grade, 10th grade, and 12th grade. I was shocked because the suggestion had nothing to do with health and everything to do with appearance. The girls are all thin dancer types who absolutely do not need to watch their weight. It made me think of the coach of Sparkle Motion from Donnie Darko. Anyway, it was eye-opening and depressing.

you're looking at it from the perspective of someone who isn't fat. as a fat person, i would be more inclined to eat healthier if it was more accessible and required less preparation.

i was poking fun at myself...i never got fat thru my diet of alcohol, tobacco, and bad food....but to me it's as much, if not more, of a risk for me. so what if i haven't gained weight. you're right. it's natural for me. but my liver is probably eating my pancreas right now, and my lungs might look like beef jerkey. thin doesn't mean healthy. i don't tell fat jokes. and i realize that i'm on the opposite end of the spectrum of the obese. read my original post again, and just deal with it. there's nothing more boring of a conversation than a political one.

John hasn't always looked that way. He's positively ripped at this point because he works his ass off and practices what he preaches.

I'm a fatass and have done what John says at certain points in my life and been a badass. The problem is having the discipline to maintain it for more than 6 months to a year.

I was carb busting and running 3 times a week May - July, then I shot 3 projects and the stress put me on my ass and back in line at McDonalds for big mac, larg fry, large coke, and fish filets. That's my cycle. Still I have no one but me to blame. Plus you can totally eat healthy (enough) via fast food now. McDonalds has salads and KFC has baked (and delicious) chicken.

The first step would be not using drive-thrus.

I'm going to disagree and say that genetics has something to do with obesity.

The studies I referenced were population based studies which showed that when the population started eating more and moving less, overweight and obesity rates went up.

As to obesity and genetics - you may have a predisposition to burn less, or burn more efficiently than the next person, so you may have a (genetic) predisposition to gain weight (or retain weight) more easily. Yes. BUT - BUT, that still doesn't determine how fat you end up. That is still controlled entirely by the laws of physics - energy in versus energy out. Physics trumps genetics and everything else every single time. You can no more defy that, than you can defy gravity no matter what your genetics are.

So, eat less and exercise more. Are you still fat? Keep eating less and exercising more and at some point, I guarantee you, you will lose weight and stop being fat. Guarantee. If you have a genetic predisposition to be fat, you'll have to eat less than the next fellow to lose weight or maintain lower weight. But it is still entirely within your power (assuming you are not force-fed, or mentally ill).

Take ugafan - even if there is only one store for 1000 miles around him, and that store sells nothing but junk food, it is still 100% within his power to be as thin as he wishes to be. All he has to do, is eat less of the food from that store, or any other store. Eating more junk food is not going to help him.

Again - you have all the power to be any weight you desire. For some it is harder than for others, but all have that power.
