intercut A1 SD 16x9 with DVX footage?

Is it possible to intercut A1 SD 16x9 30f footage, with 30p footage shot with a DVX (which is 4:3), in Vegas 7? Wouldn't Vegas have a problem with the pixel aspect ratio?

If I want the finished product to be 16x9, what's the best way to shoot? 4:3 on both cams, and then crop the A1 output? Would Squeeze mode on the DVX work?

I would just shoot squeeze mode. Gives you the least headache. And 30F is identical to 30p; I had a two camera shoot with the A1 and the HVX back in July. Both were 30p/F and they intercut seamlessly.

Thanks Jade. So can I just capture the Squeeze mode footage into Vegas, and put it into a DV Widescreen 30p timeline in Vegas, alongside my A1 30F 16x9 footage? Is it as simple as that, or is there any rendering involved?

Squeeze mode gives you widescreen footage with a PAR of 1.2, so your NLE will unsqueeze it, no rendering involved. It reduces quality on the DVX but it'll intercut fine on a 16x9 timeline.

excellent. This is exactly what I needed to know. I've read that the quality reduction produced by Squeeze mode is very small, basically undetectable. Is that true?

Any further suggestions, then, on how to match the DVX Squeeze with A1 16x9 SD?

Well...no. It's detectable or else Panasonic wouldn't sell a $600 anamorphic adapter for the DVX. It's definitely going to looks softer next to the A1's 16x9 footage. The question is will your average viewer notices or care.

ok, thanks again Jade. Last few questions on this (I think!):

So if I could get my hands on an anamorphic adapter, that produces a 16x9 image? Would that require any rendering, or would the workflow be exactly as described above?

It's identical. No rendering require.

Intercut 4:3 Letterbox DVX with 16x9 A1 footy?

Intercut 4:3 Letterbox DVX with 16x9 A1 footy?

So it turns out the DVX footage was actually shot 4:3 letterbox, not squeeze mode. Will it be possible to intercut this with my 16:9 A1 footage in Vegas?

I think the answer to your question is YES.

I've used Vegas a little about a year ago, so I'm no expert. However, I remember that there was a function that lets you crop footage for 16x9. I would create a 16x9 project, drop your DVX footage on the timeline, and use this tool to crop the footage. I can't remember the name of the tool, and whether it is in the menus or if you can just right-click your clip and get the option. I seem to remember that it brought up a new smaller window (similar to when you do your titling in Vegas) that had this crop function.

Since your footage is already letterboxed you should not need to reposition the framing.

I wish I could provide more help, but since I'm a FCP and Premiere Pro user and not a Vegas editor, this is the best I can do.

If you haven't already tried, the Vegas section on this forum might provide the answer.

Drop your DVX footage into a 16x9 time line and use the Pan/Crop tool for each clip to change it to 16x9. There is a preset already made for it so it should take you all of three seconds. You can then copy that clip, select all your other DVX clips and "paste" that crop change to all of them at one so you don't have to manually do every one.
