During run and gun shots, I have often been forced to focus based on distance readings on the lense. I only use this method when sun light makes it very difficult to see the monitor or evf for exact focusing. My proposal is to have a laser, not sonic (The beam is too wide) range finder that would allow the operator to measure the precise distance to an exact object, even between tightly spaced objects like a chain link fence. Standard AF is not always good idea to employ in these situations either as often the cam will focus on the wrong object. If the RED operator could point the center of the screen where there was a crosshair and get an exact straight line distance, the dial on the lense could be more accurately set, insuring a better focus in tough to confirm situations.
