Yes the Rode NT3 is a great mic but its heavy if he plans on booming with it. If you go to the audio section you will see all the suggested listings for hypercardiod solutions.

I'm sure the AKG is a nice bang for the buck especially if it sounds anything like the CK series.

No I haven't used this particular mic, but I've used similar AKG mics and they performed well. ( this was the cheapest brand name pencil mic I could find on the B&H Photo Video website )

Taking a quick peek at the Rycote Mic Database, the tech specs for the AKG Perception 170 mic look pretty good.

Might i also suggest the Azden SGM PD-II It is a $200 dollar microphone that is an amazing quality it is very small so it fits on the side of the camera but i i also use it with my boom pole! We have a blimp for outside and it just has really really nice sound both inside and out! Here is a link:
