indifocus DSLRsm...ehhhh.

[EDIT! I WAS SENT SOME OF THE WRONG PARTS. NEW REVIEW TO FOLLOW WHEN THEY'RE REPLACED!]

I got my indifocus DSLRsm today and I am somewhat disappointed. The rods are nice, and the clamps attach nice and tightly. Unfortunately the system is pretty poorly designed. I really couldn't get a comfortable position. The new shoulderpad is on some flimsy metal and flops around, and isn't very comfortable at all. All mount points that aren't on the rods (which are done with traditional clamps shaped like the rods) are done with a screw system that is design to gouge the attachment points...already the bars the handles go on, and that the shoulder mount goes on, are covered in deep, unsightly gouges. Furthermore the tolerances on the camera mount height adjust are not great, and it tends to want to wobble from side to side. Lastly, the shoulder mount, aside from being heavy (due to a counter weight which does nothing), flimsy, and designed for a shoulder shape not possessed by any human that I have yet encountered, makes the entire rig bounce around when you walk, and is far too heavy and flimsy to allow the rig to be mounted on a tripod without removing everything.

All in all a not-balanced, cheaply constructed, easily damaged, uncomfortable, poorly designed rig. I regret spending the money.

I hope with more testing I will get used to it...but I will be calling Indifocus tomorrow, hopfully I can get the crappy shoulder piece here exchanged with the one from their indirails pro XVsm kit, which is more traditional and clamps onto the rods in a normal, non-gougey way. Using the rails with no shoulder piece and just the front handles (which despite the fact they are hard to adjust, requiring an alan wrench...which to be fair was included, and are dependent on gouging the bars that they adjust along) was actually quite comfortable despite the lack of shoulder pad, and I think that the system will benefit from a more traditional shoulder pad.

I've heard the indifocus guy is quite reasonable, so I will let you know how that goes.

I was really shocked that the shoulder piece was as poorly designed as it was...as for build quality on the rest, it's useable even if cosmetically challenged, and I suppose you get what you pay for...I'll see if I can get that shoulder piece exchanged though.

To say a few nice things about the rig: the rods are lightweight and attractive. They included a quick release mount on the top. The handles are adjustable to a nice comfortable length, rather than being cramped up top in the other indifocus mount or even in redrock micro gear...they reminded me of zacuto in terms of design concept but not in terms of build quality or execution.

That's about it.

Thanks for the informative review. I was considering the IndiFocus, but I've been using my old Varizoom DV Media Rig and surprisingly really like using it with the GH1. The stabilizer bar/belt really helps keep the camera steady and my arms from getting tired. I'll probably modify it for rails so I can add a follow focus to the setup.

Actually right now I'm enjoying the handles reconfigured into a position like the hotrod rig. For the most part I am happy with it aside from the shoulder issues. I am more of a results kind of person over arbitrary issues...I managed to fix the low tolerance in the riser plate with some gaff tape (you know it :) ) etc. In general I like it...I just really feel the shoulder piece goes beyond cheap build quality to being simply poorly conceived. I have a feeling the other shoulder piece would handle things better. Will be calling tomorrow, heard indi guy is quite reasonable..we'll see if I can exchange that piece.

Here's the way it looks right now, handles adjusted for a different kind of grip, and sans shoulder piece...which doesn't work too well and is probably what you wanted pictures of...but the thing's enough of a hassle to deal with I don't much want to deal with it again tonight...I figured I'd showcase the part of the product that I like.

In the above pictures you can see an example of the kind of gouging I'm getting (from the sort above and from the bolts hitting the rods they tighten into. See the first pic, on the left (frame right) handle's main handlebar part, as well as on the right, and midway up the rod, there is clearly visible gouging...after like an hour of use.

One of my main gripes with indifocus gear was that it just doesn't seem like quality gear. While my MicroShouldermount is rather expensive and uncomfy, it is at least very solidly built.

I agree with that. I have one and I rarely use it on my shoulder.

Hey Ben, which lens is that on your GH-1 in the pictures? It looks like a Tokina? Would be interested in the adapter origin if so.
Cheers,
Sam.

Alright just sent an email to Tim/indifocus...we'll see how that goes. I've heard the phone is the better way to get in contact, but we'll see. I'll call if I don't hear back.

I think I'd be much happier with the shoulder piece from their indirailsProXVsm system, which is more traditional and clamps directly under the rails. I think the best way to get an offset shoulderpad is like redrock is doing with three rails, and I plan to do that at some point.

DSLRsm shoulder piece was a nice experiment but should probably never have shipped.

Good news! (I suppose.) I just got off the phone with Tim from Indifocus. Apparently my system came with some of the wrong hardware. It's supposed to be adjustable with half-wing knobs, not alan wrenches, and is not supposed to gouge, using a convex end on the bolts! This sounds great actually!

They're going to be sending me new hardware shortly, a piece with a better fit on the camera plate, a new quick release plate that slides, and replacements for anything that got gouged (which probably ends up being most of the system aside from the rods.) They're also going to email me a shipping label and I can send back whatever they're replacing.

Says they'll send it out tomorrow after I get some photos to them tonight.

We decided to deal with maybe/maybe not changing out the shoulder-mount after I get a chance to try the system out the way it was meant to be constructed.

I will post a new review when I get the parts.

Tim was very helpful, understanding, and apologetic. He was also very engaged and I am pretty sure had seen at least the OP and the photos on this thread.

Looking forward to getting my new stuff.

Don't flee from this system just yet, I will let you know how things go, but right now I am very optimistic. I understand that mistakes happen and I in no way hold that against Tim and his company, but rather think that their willingness to assume responsibility and make things right is a testament to what customer service should be like everywhere. Here's hoping the hardware holds up to their service when it gets here!

True that! I have made some big mistakes before, and I'm willing to let some pretty big mistakes go, so long as the person who makes the mistakes makes a real effort to make them right.

My new parts have arrived today and I will be playing with them within a few hours, I will be posting a new thread.

Curious, how did you get such a quick response from him (IndiFocus)? I emailed him 2 days ago with a very simple sales question and have yet to get a response.

Pretty quickly; I think he saw this thread and realized I got sent the wrong hardware and then got my email.

In any case I've heard calling is the best solution.
