So I've had the Indi Focus for a few days now, and let me start off by saying that this will be a positive review. I am quite happy with my purchase.
First off, the indi focus is $299, a great price point, that left me a little skeptical at first, but now feel the price is one hell of a deal for what you get.
The follow focus fits nicely with the DVX, it does take a little adjustment when securing it to your rods, but after that initial adjustment it works really well. I have found that it works best when you line it up with the smooth part of the ring closest to the front of the lens.
The build is very nice, mostly metal parts, and very solid. Warning attatching the follow focus will cover up your "Gain" controls, but who uses that anyways
. I actually feel this is a good thing as it prevents you from accidently flipping the switch.
Now for the down side, and these are not big problems, I'm just being fair.
First, I did notice that the white marker plate and hand knob seem to be glued a little off access, causing a wobbly looking rotation, however, this does not affect the operation at all.
Second, when I first got the unit, the contact wheel had been screwed uneavenly, causing it to rotate off axis. Tim quickly sent me a replacement wheel, and a whip to make up for the bad part. I replaced the part and everything works great now.
The final negative is that changing directions while focusing, ie clockwise to counter clockwise, causes a slight spin where the gears do not connect, therefore the contact wheel does not spin. I can't see this being a problem, unless you are searching for focus, and go past and then try to come back, it would just make things take a little longer.
Other than those things, which not all turned out to be bad, the indi focus is great, built solid, has great contact with the focusing ring, and looks very professional. By the way, the whip is great as well, and attatches very easily to the hand nob.
Great work Tim.
