Incredible Follow Focus Review

FYI FreshDV has updated our follow focus review series lately, first with the SGPro SGFollow Focus unit, and today with two units from ARRI; the good-ole ARRI FF4 and the brand-spankin' new ARRI MFF-1 HD camera lightweight follow focus. You can watch both in the video playlist here: http://tinyurl.com/ffreviews

We'll have the Zacuto flippable Z-Focus review added early next week.

Cool Matthew,

Is Cinevate's Durus on your list as well?

Certainly. I'm told that we'll have a Durus review unit in hand shortly.

Nice. Heh, heh; I just noticed that I asked the same question way back in '07 when the original release was imminent and turns out it was finally released only a few short weeks ago. Looking forward to your review...

Yeah, it's been in development for a while now. Back in the day, Cinevate provided us an early unfinished prototype of the follow focus...based on our feedback, the feedback of others and further testing, it has been completely re-engineered. I'm hopeful that this updated Durus design will be solid and a competent performer. We shall see...

if i had to do it all over again i woulda gone for the cinevate instead of the petroff/zacuto... I mean.. the cinevate one looks hot.. i mean freaken hot.. can;t wait to see the review!

Matt, you will have an FF in about 4 days, along with a pile of cool stuff from our Pegasus Linear Tracking systems collection. As one of the few folks to have had the "abandoned" design in hand, you'll likely be also the most appreciative in terms of what the unit has become. You're invited to take the "support your entire rig from the follow focus knob and spin it 360 challenge" ... just so folks don't think we did in any Copperfieldish stunts with our own demonstration :)

For the record, we've been shipping our new FF units out for the last six weeks but are still working to match our production volume with the demand for the units. In other words, we've left the price low and kept a pretty low profile on the Durus until the CNC shop (and a few other partners) can come up to speed with what we're asking of them. Every unit is hand assembled and calibrated in-house to a very demanding standard in terms of our near-zero (well under 1 degree of lash) and utter smoothness under light to very heavy loads. Feedback from the customers who have them in hand has been extremely positive. The most important thing from our perpspective is that internally we are 100% now finally satisfied with the product....certainly enough to have extended a lifetime warranty on the unit.
