In Plain English Please...

I'm confused by the "pull down" noise regarding the C100 and would like to know whether or not a BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 will work well as an external recorder and whether or not to expect C300 quality files. What's the bottom line in a 7th Grade vocabulary please.

My problem is a lack of understanding. Am I correct that the C100 HDMI output is always 60i? Can I set the Hyperdeck to record 29.97p and not need a pulldown? Can I bring the 60i file directly into Premier CS5.5 and simply deinterlace to make it progressive on a 29.97 timeline? I rarely use 24p for anything and am wondering if there are workflow considerations if I limit my shooting/editing to 29.97p (as is my custom). Please forgive me if this is a really stoopid confusion on my part.

The C100 really is a 24p, camera. 29.97 requires pulldown removal from the HDMI stream, either in the external recorder or in your NLE or with a separate program. Do not use Premier so dcanot answer that question. many of the early test show artifical moire that would not be there with proper pulldown removal.

So you can't set the C100 to record 29.97p? It just jumps everything out the HDMI up to 60i? Pulldown removal MUST be done regardless of record settings on anything recorded externally via the HDMI output? Is that correct?

Here it is in plain English: if you want to pull ProRes 4:2:2 HQ 23.976 Progressive Scan files from the SSD you are recording to, then purchase a Ninja-2.

Let's suppose that I buy the much less expensive Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 and import my 60i ProResHQ into Premier CS6 on Windows 7 Pro 64bit. Is the 2:2 pulldown to get to 29.97p fairly painless? Is it merely a matter of "interpret footage" in CS6? What sort of rendering delays can I expect? Is it a full 10 bit 4:2:2 pulldown...no compromises (i.e., no quality loss for keying purposes)?

I have had strange results in FCPX interpreting/over-riding 60i. It always ends up working. THough it was not consistent.

I have used a Ninja with v1 firmware, I will update this if the dealer I got it from says it is OK, and also a NanoFlash. Both record the output from HDMI to 29.97PSF (progressive segmented file) NLE's are supposed to see these flags and interpret as 29.97P (though this is not really a standard). As I said it works you just have to create a 30p timeline and drop the clips in (in theory) but sometimes this does not work and you have to go into the files settings and tell the NLE to interpret as Progressive. This is a pain but we all have to live with it.

BTW neither the Ninja v1 firmware 1.0, nor the NF latest firmware can read the TC from the C100, this is also somewhat of a pain.

I have a Shuttle v1 here as well, I will test it at some point to see how it works with the C100. And I will also try directly into the Mac with Matrox mX02 and BM Capture hardware. I will report findings later. Possible even my AJA HDe (using component) it does not have HDMI only HD-SDI.

You can only do it in After Effects, meaning you have to either render it out of After Effects, use dynamic link to pull it into Premiere, or edit the entire project in After Effects. BTW, I did everything I shot on the C100 within AE/Pr CS6 on Windows 7.
