GH2 In camera card/ memory available meter - How accurate is it?

I'm just curious how accurate the internal "time left on card" meter on the GH2 or even the Gh1 for that matter that tells you the time remaining on a given SD card is? Does it use a preset algorithiem or something that is based on the card size at stock speeds, or does it re calculated when you hack the bit-rate?

I'm running a fairly high bit rate hack and trying to figure out how many cards I need to take on a shoot. In 24H mode a 16GB card shows about 21 mins, which based on some test shooting I was doing is probably fairly accurate, but I am not in the habit of looking at the meter so all I can say is when I was shooting a family dinner I filled up one card really quick, too quick in my opinion. Since it looks like I can get closer to an hour (assuming the meter is right) on the 24L setting I may have to shoot a combination of 24L and 24H on my next outing since I will be in the field for a week and am getting near the max of my wife's tolerence for the UPS truck delivering new SD cards and accessories for my camera..lol

Secondly, does anyone have a rough rule of thumb as to how much memory is enough when doing a week long trip and shooting a docu-style feature while on a multi-city/ location shoot. I will be in 7 cities in as many days up and down the CA coast doing a series of travel docs (sort of a working vacation, if you know what I mean). I am getting nervous I won't have enough cards and keep buying new ones everytime I find a deal.. I am upto x12=16gb, x4=32GB and x10=8Gb and about to buy more....
