Improving perfomrance in Premiere CS3

I have an oldish machine with 4GB Ram and a 256MB AGP Graphics card.
Video playback is juddery and stalls regularly.

How much difference would a 1GB Graphics card actually make to my playback whilst editing? I am not worried about speeding up rendering time, I just want to improve the perfomance whilst editing.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

And do a fresh install of windows, if it and install older than a year old, it will be a slow as a snail.

Sometimes, on a relatively old installation, the best thing is to just start fresh. While it's incredibly daunting to those who don't keep regular backups, the performance boost is well worth the troubles IMO. Plus, and maybe it's just me, I love the feeling of a fresh computer with nothing but my critical editing programs on it. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

ohh yeahhhhh... you just want to cream thinking about have a start menu with 5 items on it.....*drool*

I also have an older desktop that I built myself 4 years ago. Just bought new SATA drives, new case with fans (heat will have an affect on performance) and a new graphics card. After a fresh install of windows xp I had smoothe playback. (Before clips would not play after a few seconds but sound would keep going) So backup your files first and think about making upgrades to your drives, CPU, video card, and ram. A fresh install of windows is amazing! Since you have an older system, parts won't be as expensive anymore. Check tigerdirect.com or newegg.com and even ebay/craigslist

thanks for the advice...however, i bought the machine from my work and it doesn't have all the installation disks. I might be able to get them, but in the meantime is there a way of 'cleaning' the drive to get the same results as starting from scratch.
Also, to 64kproductions, what size graphic card did you buy? I was thinking of getting a 1gb card, which i think is the largest AGP card available?

Cheers

No, there's no way to get the same results as actually reformatting and all. However, for general computer cleanliness, you might want to check out Ace Utilities and Uniblue Registry Booster. If you know what you're doing, those can do a lot to fix general system inefficiency.

I use Registry Booster to keep my registry running clean and efficient, and I use Ace Utilities to gut out all the junk files bogging down the system. I should warn you though, that you MUST know what you're doing, or risk deleting some reg key or system file that you really need. Then you're screwed.

Oh, and if you're on a 32bit system, try Window Washer instead of Ace Utilities. It's safer, and almost as effective. I switched to Ace because WW wasn't available in 64bit.

Time to upgrade, man... AGP is a dead slot on motherboards, and while you can probably find a new*er* card for AGP slots, you will not find anything within the last two years (maybe two...) that fits. PCI-E has been standard since about late 2005-early 2006, so I highly recommend upgrading.

Yes agp is dead but for the last 5 years i've edited with an AGP card and they are more than capable.

Also if you have to windows key stuck to the side of the box, you can use any windows disk thats the same version thats printed on the sticker with the key.

so if you dont have a disk, ask a friend, buy just the disk online or download it from somwhere
