Importing P2 via camera with Snow Leopard

Anyone having issues importing P2 on a Mac with Snow Leopard? We typically connect the camera via firewire to our towers or MBP. I'm reading people with Duel Adapters are having issues but wasn't sure if any using the camera was having issues.

No issues here. I'm running Snow Leopard and haven't had any issues transferring from the HPX170. I connect via Firewire 400.

Hi Christopher,
Duel doesn't work with snow leopard, at all. I boot from an external Leopard drive for a Duel Adaptor transfer with a new MBP (that came installed with SL).

While transferring with the camera works, it was not a viable option for us - don't want to tie up a camera during transfer and the transfer is MUCH quicker when using a DA.

Hooking up my HPX170 or my friends HVX200 as a card reader through firewire using either E or R series P2 cards on my MBP works fine.

The only solution you now have to transfer without using a pc are the two official panasonic 5 slot readres ... know it's big and expennsive, or, what I have the NEXTO DI video pro that dumps the cards onto its internal 500 hdd and battery powered, pricey but sooooo cool !

Not true; you can plug any firewire hard disk into the camera and the camera can transfer to the hard disk by itself, no computer needed.

barry can you please explain a bit more.... Thanks.
1394 Host Mode. You can plug a firewire drive in, and the camera takes control of it and copies its card contents onto the drive.

If you have a more-recent camera like the HPX300, it has USB Host mode, and can copy its card contents onto a USB drive.

How is that done? I have a 300gig firewire drive free that I would love to use just for that so I can keep it in my bag and stop lugging the laptop around. I also assume that it would have to be formatted as a FAT32 drive?

On edit: Sorry, it did not show your post before. Anyway, is it pretty straight forward once you have it in host mode to copy to it? Is there any particular way the drive has to be set up file system wise?

The camera will format the drive; in fact it must format the drive. So make sure it's absolutely empty. Then put the camera in 1394 Host mode, and go to PC mode, and plug in the drive, and you should get a menu option with "format" as an option... and go from there...

Haven't you guys ever tried using the camera to dump to a FireWire drive? I thought that every HVX/HPX owner had tried it at least once?

You have to format the drive using the camera, then it is simple, as Barry suggested, switch the camera to 1394 Host mode, this is all in the manual and in Barry's book. It works, but it still ties up your camera and from my experience, it is still pretty slow in comparison to the Duel Adapter.

Yup, like Barry said no computer just camera to hard drive,
just a quick note: its takes about 45 mins to empty a 16gbs card to a Hard drive tho firewire
its SUPER SLOW!!!!!!!! I wish it worked with usb! SO MUCH FASTER

It can work through USB, if you use a USB On-The-Go drive. In my experience with those drives, it ends up being about the same.

Ended up having a bout of insomnia and gave it a try. it copied footage and verified the footage as well. It was only a 20 second clip just to test it, so I did not really get a feeling about the speed difference between that and hooking up the camera and drive to the computer. I also have yet to hook up the drive to a computer, but I assume it will work fine. In all, it was so easy I am kinda embarrassed I did not figure it out before.

never tried it. don't know why though.. didn't think the camera could take control of the drive but that'll make my life so much easier. thanks barry.

I'll try that as well. I have a HVV200a and I plan on buying a G Drive (500GB). Barry, when the drive is formatted does it prompt you to re-format it when you plug it to a computer?

No, the drive is formatted in a FAT32-compatible way. Each card offload is its own partition. When you plug it into the computer, it will bring up an individual drive on your desktop, for each card that you offloaded.
