importing issues / data management

does anybody know if it is safe to import P2 card information into Final Cut Pro w/o copying the contents of the card to the hardrive/ or desktop.

what is the best way to manage your data in the most safe environemt? we have 2 250GB hardrives, that are filling up very very quickly.

any suggestions would be much appreciated.

thanks.

Write protect the p2 card before mounting it.

What is the "best way to manage your data in the most safe enviroment?"

Do you mean without copying the data to a BU drive?

thanks for your re-ply.

after shooting on your P2 cards. what is the best way to store your info?
and have it in a safe place. i am currently shooting a feature that has an enormous amount of footage.

Just to add to David's post:

You cant have enough redundant hard drives. If you are shooting a feature with enormous amounts of footage then all that footage should be kept on at LEAST 3 hard drives with 1 of those drives being kept at a separate location than the other 2.

People often think the separate location thing is a joke until an earthquake, tornado, fire happens...

As far as importing directly from the p2 cards: are you relying on the capture scratch folder as your master? I think that is a bad idea, think of your .mxf files as your masters. Data could be corrupted, by using Disk utility to create a disk image you can ensure that all the data is copied correctly, even finder drag and drop can (though rarely) create mistakes that using disk utility and verifying would eliminate.

If eliminating the need to copy AND ingest files into FCP why not invest in something like Raylight? It would allow you to edit the .mxf files in FCP without having to go through the p2 ingest process.

firestore vs P2 cards

firestore vs P2 cards

firestore vs P2 cards.....is their really a big difference?

anyone have any experience with the firewire drive that accepts P2 cards, i believe its made by Duel Technologies. I think its only for 4/8 gb cards.

also, how do i import the firestore files onto my computer?
do i drag the files into FCP. lets say i dont have FCP, what do i do.

thanks alot for answering these questions. i know its alot, and i sincerely appreciate it. thank you.

sincerely,
