I imported MTS files onto FCP and the files played great and quality was great too. But when I exported out I loss the quality and lines where all over the footage especially around edges looked like a lot of moire as well. Can you tell me whats going on here why the quality went down during export ?

Better to log & transfer to ProRes. I am surprised you could even view the MTS files in Final Cut.
I just tried it and FCP will not import MTS files???
Premiere CS5 will import MTS.

The good old master render problem. If you are rendering to a really lossy codec like H264 then this is all too common. Not many NLE have really high quality built in lossy encoders. Some folk ( certainly this guy ) render the master file to a high quality intermediate like Prores or Cineform and then transcode with other tools from that. It could give you visually lossless performance.

Can you believe that there is a professional called a compressionist. All they focus on for a living is compressing for DVD and Blu-ray.Tells you something about how difficult it is to get a good transcode if you need to train for it.....I read that they are quite hands on unlike the automated process most of us use :embarasse

I have found Microsofts expression encoder to be amazing for final renders - It's free for VC-1 encoding up to I think 135 mbps.

Many folk rave about x264 for internet distribution but it has a bit of a small curve and it is hard to find one product that does it right in one package. There are a few GUIs that simplify it. It is for absolutely free and can produce quality as good as the professional encoders that cost you an arm and a leg. You will may different bits to get it to work. On my setup - it is as good as the blu rays you watch. However it is annoying that you need to jump through a few hoops to get it to work right.
