Important Information I got from apple regarding duel adapter and snow leopard

As many have painfully learned, the duel adapter is not compatible with OSX 10.6. From what i have gathered the makers of DuelAdapter will not be updating the driver to work with 10.6.

I had lunch today with one of apples leads of tech support in Cupertino who is a friend of a friend who works at apple. I originally just wanted to give him my mac book pro and have him walk me through a revert back to 10.5

Turns out (as many of you know) its a nightmare from the sense that you are basically going to restore your computer to nearly factory settings, aside from some user and network preferences that are recoverable. But you can kiss your applications goodbye. After learning i have to that, i started asking for plan b.

I was told that the main reason DuelAdapter people arent releasing the update for 10.6 is it simply will cost them more money to have someone write the driver update. They probably feel that they will not be selling many more duel adapters (since people who want it already have it and new MCP have no expresscard slot). So financially it makes no sense.

Here were the alternatives (please correct me if im making any mistakes)

1. wipe the system clean and start from install discs for 10.5 (not into that idea)
2. just offload from the camera via firewire (duh..)
3. go S10 notebook and a addonics adapter (read a post about that earlier, really interesting but im not in the mood to spend another 400 bucks right now)
4.wait for a possible driver update (unlikely)
5.wait for panaonics solution coming in spring of '10 (long time sort of..)
6.possible optical usb adapter to read p2 (not for another 2 years or so)

none of these really seem "fair". I mean why shouldn't this darn dueladapter work?? I basically felt like i paid more to end up having a workflow for offloading that doesnt work. The gentleman from apple came up with this idea and suggested i introduce it here on the forum and see where it goes.

He suggested going to www.sourceforge.net which is a basically a place where people can write open source software & drivers. On this site we as a community can start a project looking for help to write an update for 10.6. Here is the catch, it is HIGHLY unlikely anyone would write the driver from scratch. But (and surprisingly i was informed this happens often) we can get the DuelAdapter people to give up the code for the driver so that whoever writes the updated driver can simply pick up from where they left off.

Now the two variables are of course: 1. will duel give up the code? 2. will someone write the driver

perhaps if we found someone to do this and got duel to accept as well we could set up a process where its say $10 dollars to download the driver software. half of it going to duel and the other half to the person who wrote the driver.

Ideally it be great if it was free, which could happen to.

I guess i just wanted to throw that out there and see what everyone thought.

for the heck of it im also going to send feedback (apple.com/feedback) regarding my frustration and perhaps apple can put some pressure on as well.

Sorry for the long post too...

I'm not one of those who normally grouse about Panasonic's or Apple's lack of support... However, with that said, I have to admit that I find it remarkable that there are so many P2 users on Macs and that there is not an affordable, simple card reader available.

I have an old flash card reader that I bought at Staples for about 30 bucks ten years ago that I've been able to use for every type of still and audio file that I need, through every OS since.

I realize that P2 cards are way more complex, but still...

My solution, which has worked perfectly, was to buy and refurbish an old PowerBook with the slot... but those older units are getting harder to find as time goes on... And working on documentaries on the road means that using the camera is an unacceptable alternative.

Independent filmmakers have enough money problems - they shouldn't have to shell out over 2 grand in order to simply offload cards. Panasonic or Apple should provide hardware at a reasonable cost.

open source seems like a logical idea, but if it were that easy, id imagine the folks at duel (or apple) would have the resources to do it.

id imagine this (like the idea of a usb or firewire "reader") is more complex than it seems. but id be happy to pay as much as $100 to whomever if it means that my macbook pro wasnt stuck at 10.5 for eternity... though personally, i dont see anything in snow leopard that i need. so if this is what we can expect from apple OS wise, 10.5 isnt a bad place to live for a while...

when scarlet comes out in a year or so, id bet the P2 market will get cut in about half right out the gate anyway

This has all been debated before over many forums, Apple and Duel don't care as there is NO money "May I repeat NO MONEY" to be made from such a simple device, If you want a "driver" try writing it yourself, without specialist skills/heaps of time/access to codes, it's all acedemic waffle.
I spent many months getting upto speed to write my own P2 reader driver, by the time I had it 99% , apple changed the OS with another update, that wiped out all my efforts, the same has happened with SL OS.
Here's alterative 7, My suggestion is if you want a P2 reader cheaper than the Pana solutions, get your order in for the Sonnet Qio reader, it will be 1000% better than the "hit or miss duel".
http://store1.sonnettech.com/
and if you think that the Qio is an expensive solution then spend your time/money on writing your own driver , you may get it to work one day, but I doubt it very much.
Or just get an cruddy windows PC sloted laptop they are cheap n work with P2 well.

Couldn't the Duel people hire it out, then charge say $10 for the driver DL? Would re-coup their investment and allow their adapter to keep selling. I for one just got a macbook pro and haven't bought their adapter yet. But with no driver I will never buy it.

i emailed duel systems, asking them if they plan on releasing a 10.6 update. and i then asked if the answer is no if they would consider giving up the code to a 3rd party independent developer to write the update.

If more people email them and for the lack of better words "hassle" them perhaps we can get this to work .
