7D Implementing Magic Lantern on Canon 7D - The security issue

Hi guys,

As a proud 7D owner I feel left in the dark when it comes to porting Magic Lantern to the 7D.

I've tried for some time now, as I know others have, to get some usefull information regarding, what exactly the security measures are preventing.

I'd like some insight on that, and I might have a suggestion to overcome this.

I've worked as a developer myself for many years, and I understand it might not be as rewarding to overcome security issues on a camera, in comparison to adding nice and new features to the "Magic" Magic Lantern.

As I understand it, the problem is not porting the software - the problem lies within some counter that prevents continously updates to the firmware. I get that, and therefore any development to the current Magic Lantern feature list is welcome, as when and if the security issue will be overcome, the feature list at that time will become available to the 7D also.

So, what I am suggesting is that if we can get ANYONE to focus on this security measure - perhaps paying a freelancer to ONLY focus on this, will be more rewarding that the continous wait without any indication that there is work taking place on the 7d.

As many others, I've been trying to get information as to what is exactly the problem, to no prevail. All I have is the access to the Wiki page, with a very old status message.

I guess many people are contacting Trammell and others working on the fantastic Magic Lantern project. Maybe it is time - and maybe helpfull for them - if they can relay any information they have regarding this issue in a form, that allows us to get other developers to overcome this obstacle. I'm sure they are getting hammered with requests to this.

Of course, this is only viable, if I'm not mistaking, that the actualt porting of the code is not the problem - its execution is prevented due to some counter.

So, I'm suggesting that anyone that is close to Magic Lantern developers or Mr. Hudson himself, can you get any response to my suggestion that we get someone to work on the security issue alone, and then provide the Magic Lantern group with our discoveries. This of course requires that the Magic Lantern group provide specific details as to how the security measures of the 7D is preventing the exection of the custom firmware.

...

Maybe I'm way off here - but as any of you 7D owners know - nothing is happening, and it's HARD to get any indications as to when or if something will happen.

And also, I did not as of yet donate any money to the ML project, so I'm not an unhappy donor or anything like that. Just trying to be constructive, and on that note, I'd be willing to chip in to any freelancer who's up for the challenge!

cheers,

Christian.
