impeachment hearing

Yes I think I can. I am watching and see both camera's from another perspective. One with autofocus and a wobbly (remote controlled?)tripod the other with steady and better image.

Not gonna talk politics, but I often notice differences in multicam coverage, even in high profile events like debates (usually the white balance is the culprit). But honestly I spent most of my life not obsessing over the way cameras work/look and never noticed, so I don't think it's super important.

Yesterday, Canon announced the 8K ready broadcast zooms, those that weigh a ton and cost a ton.

That's in case someone wants to see America's finest in 8K.

And the Olympics also.

With all the money that goes into buildings/rooms like this, you'd think they would all be outfit with decent PTZ cameras that match each other. And with the money that they spend on people to produce this, you'd think they would match well.

A bunch of PTZ Optics newer cameras and a Tricaster to switch the streams is not a lot of cost compared to what they probably spend on lunch every day during things like this. (yes trying to stay away from politics and talk equipment)

The room is there for the hearings. The video coverage is courtesy C-SPAN. Do you think they have much budget?

NBC News has a reported budget of $250 million annually. C-Span's budget is around $60 million annually. Also, and forgive me for generalizing, but those positions at C-Span can be like positions in government where you have to work really hard to get fired. Once you are "in" with C-Span or PBS you are "in" for life, if you want to be. I know of camera ops working for a local PBS station that have been there 40 years. And they don't do good work. I don't even think some of them know how to do good work. I think, and this is political, that it is an example of how the lack of profit incentive can result in lackluster effort and lackluster product. If you aren't having to compete and you can't get fired short of doing something outrageous, why not just phone it in? Whatever. Cameras don't match. Who cares? People are still getting the content so, eh, good enough. When's lunch?

C-SPAN operates on a tight budget for most things. I’ve done a bit of work for them over the years, and it’s always low-budget. For things like BookTV and AHTV, their deliverables specify a ready-to-air file. They don’t do any post on this stuff. If it’s a single-camera event, they want to be able to take the camera card and put it straight to air, with the only addition on their end being graphics. If it’s multi-cam, they expect it to be switched/mixed. Cameras and room sound are to roll for 5 minutes before the start of the presentation, and continue for 5 minutes after.

The crew I work with often runs a 3-camera shoot with 2 camera ops for AHTV, and I send a mix to the cameras. Locked wide, coverage cam for the professor, and coverage for the audience/students. Their editor cuts it together before delivering. For that, I’ve ditched the bag and now run my X-32 Compact since I’m often dealing with 8 channels, 6 of those being boundary mics on the tables in the classroom. I send the mix to the cameras, and also record the mix + ISOs to my Sound Devices.

As for the hearings, normal C-SPAN coverage for a congressional hearing consists of three cameras and 4 crew. This is a much higher-profile event, and C-SPAN’s cameras are providing pool feeds; every network carrying the hearings is airing C-SPAN’s cameras. They’ve upped the coverage to 7 cameras and 12 crew. At that point, I’d imagine they were pulling in whatever extra resources they were able to secure.

I don't care what budget you are on, you can still pay attention to what you are doing and operate your camera properly. These are historic hearings and they are shot like a provincial school play.

Alrighty, folks. Posts have been deleted.

For those who have kept this conversation on track, focused on the technical production aspects of the hearings, thank you.

For those of you who have, for some odd reason, resorted to a pissing match, this is the only warning you will have. Any more, and you get a free vacation to not-on-DVXUser.
