Imovie & 7d

I have a job shooting some footage for an instructional dvd. I exclusively shoot 24p but may depart from it for this job. However the client is editing it and she has Imovie. I want to give her the best cuz i could always shoot with my dvx...but why...if i have my 7d. She doesnt know about all this dslr stuff and transcoding and blah. I'm a cs4 man so final cut or imovie means nothing :)...So i'd like to know a couple things.

1. I know imovie doesnt do 24p so thats out. I really dislike 60p for anything other than slowmo on a 24p timeline. So how would imovie do with HD 30p from the 7d?

2. Also how would u transcode this footage so she can edit it?

3. I have mpegstream clip (pc)...what codec could i transcode this to for her to use in imovie?

I suggest you charge the client extra and you edit it. Imovie is NOT a professional editing system, that is not your fault it is there's.

So charge them extra and you edit it, or tell them to work with a true NLE system.

Maybe not something you want to hear, but you must be straight forward with people if not your the one that's going to have the headache.

I don't really know how iMovie works, since I'm a CS4 guy like you, but I would also strongly suggest trying to convince her to let you edit it (and charge more). She'll undoubtedly like the video more if you do that, and a happy client is always a good thing!

As far as iMovie goes, I really don't know what it works with best, although I was under the impression that it converted any imported footage to its own format anyway. I can't say for sure though, since I'm PC based.

Maybe if she's so into editing this, you should ask her what format she wants? If she has no idea then its probably not the best idea to let her edit... :undecided

Yeah iMovie= totally useless in this case. It's not your job to get them a decent editing program if you're the shooter that ends your responsibility. If you sell someone an oil filter is it also your job to change their tires so the car goes? Of course not... :) So shoot whatever they can edit or just advise them to get a proper editing program if they want the footage to look it's best.

Just shoot 29.97 from your 7D and let her have the footage transcoded. You could also resize and transcode the footage to match the DVD output. Having her edit SD clips transcoded may save her some time and a headache.

Lol. Thanks guys. I can always count on you to give it to me straight. Here's the deal..her husband owns the company and this is his thinking ..."Why should he pay someone to edit it when his wife has imovie and can use it". That's what she told me.So I'll save myself the headache and shoot with my dvx. I was gonna do that anyway but I got my 7d about a month and a half ago and wanted to use it. But this looks like more hassle than its worth.

I disagree 100%, first of all you cannot even compare the footage of a dvx and 7d. 7D shoots in beautiful High Definition with rich colors and is current technology. Dvx while still good it's not HD and especially when putting it online the compression goes to hell.

Finally if you edit the way I do, it's impossible that someone who does not have the knowledge and time can do it. People basically hire me as a full package , especially for how great I edit.

All I can say is , good luck

No I'm definately not comparing the dvx to the 7d cuz there's no comparison. But if her hubby is the one who's paying for it thinks the way he does (which I stated above) then there's not much I can do but advise her, which I did. I'd rather keep her happy and deliver footage that she can edit than give her footage that she wudnt even know where to start. And I was already going to shoot it with the dvx but the 7d came in.

I def wud want to shoot with the 7d so I'll ask her again. If not I'll use the dvx. She's seen my work so she def knows what's up...she's been waiting a long time just for me specifically to shoot it for her. But as u say, its a full package...what she saw wasn't just what I shot but how I edited it. But I guess her husband wants to skimp..which I will never understand. Ur making something that will make u $ yet don't wanna pay for it to be good. Thanks again for the advice though...DEF appreciate it.

Yeah why make a stink- someone who wants their wife to cut on iMovie doesn't really know what they're doing so give them DV footage on a DVX100 which will look just fine. They wouldn't appreciate what the T2i gives them anyway and the customer is always right, even when they're wrong. :)
