I'm sorry, but WHAT??

Hey Dan,

It's probably been asked already (so many responses on these threads), but would something like the CD Nano Flash be able to record TRUE 10bit 4:2:2 (not in a wrapper) in high frame rates with the forthcoming technique you were talking about? For me, I really need something light and small for field work, especially since quite often I just shoot using the on-board LCD and a modified loupe.

Thanks for all your responses.

Dear Gene,

The heart of the nanoFlash is the Sony XDCam 4:2:2 codec module, to which we add other processors and electronics.

Sony XDCam (and MPEG-2) is 8-Bits, so until the SMPTE Standard is changed, it has to remain 8-Bits.

The Odyssey7Q has much higher processing capability than the nanoFlash, and this is what allows us to be so flexible, such as recording true 10-Bit from a Raw data stream out of the upgraded FS700.

I assume that you want something like a Odyssey7Q, but with a 5.0" OLED.

This would limit us (by the size) to one SSD, which would like recording from the FS700 to up to 120 frames per second in 2K Raw 12-Bit mode (or a little higher fps in 10-Bit mode).

We are listening to your requests and suggestions.

We do feel that having a real monitor, as opposed to a LCD display for menus and status information only, is a huge plus.

Respectfully,

Our lab is on the fourth floor of a building in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We typically point the cameras out the window towards Pike's Peak, which is a nice view.

But shooting through a less than pristine window, with reflections from the room in the glass, does not make for great images.

Since we need the camera and unit for our development and testing, we can't let it loose out of the office just yet.

It would appear most camera operators shoot in this order: babies/kids, cats, dogs, people doing stupid stuff, tests, random stuff, how-to's, weddings, shorts/indies, music videos, TV, movies. Perhaps shoot a cat, a dog, a baby, doing random stupid stuff, all in a test. Perhaps it could overtake Gangnam Style in popularity.

Ah, the calm before the footage storm :) love it

I think everyones are tired from asking a millions question. Instead of spending all these time on the forum everyones has decided to dust off they FS700 and go out and shoot some footage of they own. Dan is in the hospital suffering from a nervous breakdown because he might not get the best images out of the FS700 2K/4K Odyssey7Q :-) JKZ

Dear Friends,

I was traveling yesterday, I will be at Cine Gear Expo today in Hollywood, starting at 2 pm today.

We will be showing the Odyssey7 with the monitor features.

We created a custom firmware build for the Odyssey7Q for recording from the FS700 in 2K Raw, in 12-Bit Cinema DNG.

Later we will incorporate all of the regular Odyssey7Q features + FS700 Features into one set of firmware.

I don't mind answering questions at all.

Respectfully,

really appreciate all your time over the past few weeks Dan. I can't wait to see the results! I'm sure it'll turn out great.

First of all, I shoot with the GoPro Hero 3 a lot for fun. It's a a giant lump of crap in image quality, even my HPX170 at 720 looks higher quality so that makes no sense.
GoPro has a lot of skateboarders believing that they are shooting EPIC quality. That's why they're skateboarders, lol....
Funny there are no chart tests out there to show the effective resolution and I can guarantee it isn't even close to what's advertised.
Second, I have been using the 700 for almost a year and it is awesome. And I would put money on saying that you have never even put your hands on one so why are you coming here
bagging on something you have not ever used???

"OMG that movie sucks!!!"
"Have you seen it?"
"No..."

But thanks for your opinion. I hope you find the camera of your dreams!!!

Check out this genre-defying movie shot mostly with GoPro cameras. One of the most mind-blowing and memorable things I've seen in a long while:

Technique - A
Subject matter - A
Creativity - A++++++++
IMAGE QUALITY???? - Fail (Grainy, out of focus, blown out highlights, terrible color space)
Not all of it is GoPro because you can't get shallow DOF with one....

Hi,
I own an FS700 and I bought it with the misunderstanding that with a firmware upgrade I could shoot 4K on an attached SSD drive. I don't like the idea of paying $8,000 for a camera and then paying for firmware that is a factory update and everyone with that camera will want and paying a small fortune for equipment that will be needed for 4K. That is a heck of a lot for a camera and a big sacrifice for me. I wish I were that rich guy. I am hoping someone figures out a way to record directly to an SSD after the firmware upgrade with compressed 4K for us amateurs. I know it's all about the money, but, I want to have fun with my cameras and editing software and not break the bank. Thanks.

Are you referring to capturing onto the Sony FMU or onto an external recorder? Unfortunately Sony's 4K output is a signal that needs to be decoded and it looks like they are only licensing that ability out to Convergent Design right now. So your only options are the official Sony recorder and the CD Odyssey7Q.

If capturing 4K is an absolute must and you don't want to break the bank, your best option would probably be the BlackMagic Production Camera for $4000.

Dear Friends,

I have been away from this forum for a while attending Cine Gear Expo and other traveling.

We had a great show at Cine Gear Expo. We had our own booth next to Sony and I was in the Sony booth, with an FS700 and Odyssey7Q most of the time.

It was very rewarding for us as many told us that they wanted to get one of our Odyssey7's or Odyssey7Q's.

We have been listening very carefully to our customers and potential customers, including those on this forum.

We are also working hard to simplify our "Recording Options" while offering more features in most options.

It is our goal to make the FS700 + Odyssey7Q + SSD media + FS700 Recording Option as affordable as possible.

Hi,
Yes, I am talking about the Sony FMU that can be purchased for my FS700. If you can buy another device[Odyssey 7Q] that uses an SSD to record compressed 4K, why can't you use Sony's own FMU device to record it's version of compressed 4K directly? Thanks.

Hi Dan and thanks for taking the time to address our questions.
You really have softened the "Sony blow" for many of us. It seems like a great solution. One I actually envisioned, not knowing your company would be the one solution we can all live with. I'm grateful for that. As you know from the beginning Sony always stated "Sony proprietary recorder" so the OdysseyQ is a great alternative. I guess my "beef" now is whether or not Sony will allow us to record 10-bit S-Log at 2k or 1080p onto the OdysseyQ. Can you clarify that yet. Also any clue as to what the hardware upgrade entails? Hey thinking it through, I've gotten over the 4k RAW issue (I was upset) but the OdysseyQ seems like a marvelous choice for us. Looking forward to all it's great features. Thanks a bunch

Best,
Anthony.

Dear Anthony,

We are very happy that you like our Odyssey7Q.

As far as I know, the upgraded FS700's 2K Output is 2K Raw, 12-Bit Linear.

For 2K and 4K Raw output, S-Log or S-Log II is not necessary, nor present in the Sony's FS700 2K and 4K Raw output, only in HD, recorded internally or externally.

The 12-Bit Linear will provide a great image without having to encode it in S-Log.

This gives you approximately 4096 levels for each color, as opposed to approximately 1024 for 10-Bit, and 256 for 8-Bit.

The HD-SDI 1080p output is 8-Bit in a 10-Bit word, as are certain other cameras.

We are working on a solution to take the 2K/4K 12-Bit Raw and create compressed video in 10-Bit to overcome this limitation.

We want to implement this, then thoroughly evaluate our process and the results, before we officially promise this feature.

I do not know what the Sony FS700 Hardware upgrade entails. I have never asked this question of Juan Martinez of Sony.

It is obvious that a lot of people on this forum and elsewhere are not happy with Sony since there is a hardware upgrade involved.

From my personal perspective, I am assuming that this hardware upgrade is being performed to improve the camera in same aspect.
But, I do not know what aspect is being improved.

It could be quite a number of things. I do know that the hardware upgrade is required if using the Sony recorder solution and/or ours.

Again, it is nice to hear that you like our Odyssey7Q.

Dear Wind1,

I can't speak for Sony, but I feel that I know that reason why this is not possible.

The FS700 encodes the HD video stream, very efficiently, using up to 28 Megabits per second, which is up to 3.5 Megabytes per second.

4K, even compressed 4K, requires way more than 3.5 Megabytes per second of memory bandwidth (memory speed).

One of our SSD's can record up to around 400 Megabytes per second, and it some modes we need to use two SSD's to have enough memory bandwidth.

So, the simple answer, is that the FMU was not designed to be able to record 4K, even compressed 4K Raw.
