GH3 I'm skipping the GH3 and sticking with my GH2 (for now). Anyone else?

I used Apocolypse Now on a teaser for a potential web series, and while I can't directly compare it to the other hacks, I do have to say that the footage looks fantastic.

I think the GH2 vs GH3 debate is a lot like the GH1 vs GH2 debate. The stock GH2 looked a lot like hacked GH1 footage and in some areas the GH1 was/is better.

What sells it for me is the 60p, time code and headphone jack. I actually expect the gh3 to have less detail then a hacked gh2 but I can live with that.

I've been using the AC DrewNet Soft version long GOP. Seems pretty stable to me and with using the Lumix glass. It's quite nice but I always have my Flowmotion 2.2 handy as it's the most stable hack I've ever used.

Thanks gentleman.

I did try reading that other thread, but the "signal-to-noise ratio" hurt my brain.

Best,
Bern

Flowmotion 2 is absolutely on another level from everything else. What lpowell has taken the time to do is very special.

Thanks, Sage, but I couldn't have done it on my own. Many people have helped along the way, most crucially Vitaliy Kiselev and Chris Brandin. If you'd like to help make it happen on the GH3 as well, donations to Vitaliy's Paypal account are what keeps the project running!

Let me just say, what you did do is a matter of extraordinary focus and time-consuming precision. Yes, we wouldn't be here without Kiselev, Brandin, Driftwood & the community, but really, bravo!

Download and install Sanity 5 hack. Low bit rate and excellent quality. Very hard if any difference at all compared to the higher bit rate hacks + more stable. Furthermore RalphB developed the hack patch in relation to the uncompressed hdmi out image.... There is nothing that will look better than that.

many people focus on hacks and bits when in reality unless your cropping at 200% you won't notice a difference and even then it's marginal at best.

Thank you. Ralph's work is excellent and very reliable ;)

It's too early to say no. There's been hardly any footage and not all questions have been answered.

Exactly. In two months the camera will be shipping. By three months we will have received tons of feedback about it. That will be when a decision can be made.

The price (especially in the UK where we always get shafted) is a big issue. On what I currently know about it, it's not worth the upgrade price.

You are from Fresno, California and ended up in the UK? How did that happen?

I would be upset with UK prices too, if I lived there. They seem ridiculous.

There is still the misunderstanding, that a manufacturer with a consumer photo and pro-video department would offer the same power of one of it´s pro-cams at the price tag of one of its consumer cams.
Just imaging yourself offering the same value (your skills) with different names and different day rates.
Happens all the time in Charity work and as what we call 'loss leaders'. In the case of the digital domain it comes down to us, the customers. IF WE CONTINUE TO CAPITULATE to the manufacturers, buy constantly upgrading, then yes, you are right, they will not 'Add Value' at the same cost. However, if we dig our heels in and wait it out, they will feel pressure and THEY will capitulate to us.
I'm the classic example. I adopt late, run my gear into the ground, rent when they want me to buy, borrow when I can and if more people did that, companies would be forced to add value in order to make the sales.

After gathering all the info I could on the new GH3, and looking closely at the few videos posted online so far, I think I've decided to stick with my hacked GH2 for the time being.

Granted, not much footage has been made available yet, and it's still going to be months before anyone is able to purchase the camera, so my decision may be somewhat premature. But the bottom line, for me, is that I just don't see enough of a difference in the quality of the footage to make me plunk down $1300.

The GH2 + Orion V4b hack is giving me a super-high bitrate in an All-I codec right now, so the GH3's 72Mbps just doesn't excite me very much. We have yet to see how much more dynamic range the GH3 has over the GH2, but I'm guessing it's a marginal improvement at best (though I'd love to be proven wrong!)

The 60p at 1080 is verrrrrrry nice. But for my upcoming feature project it's not something I'm planning on using, so the feature is not as important to me.

If the GH3 had clean, recordable 24p output via HDMI at 4:2:2 (even if only 8-bit) I would buy this in a heartbeat to use with an external recorder. But apparently the output is only 4:2:0, so there's not much point.

The GH3 looks to be a fantastic camera wth many major improvements. Heck, the beefier, weather-sealed body alone is almost worth it. But at this point I think I'll wait a bit and see some more footage samples. I'm extremely happy with my GH2 footage at the moment, so there's no need for me to rush into a new model. If anything, I'd rather save some more money and get the Blackmagic Camera MFT. Having a true cinema camera and a GH2 as a B-Camera is probably a better way to go for me than just going the GH3 route.

Anyone else having similar thoughts?

I planned to buy the Lumix GH3, but I stopped because for every 8 Gb the camera recording stops, you inmaginan if this happens to me in a wedding in the most important moment. :embarasse

"DE: We were also a little confused about some of the specs with continuous recording. As I mentioned before, in European PAL countries, we have that 29-minute 59-second limitation. It's limited there, and the rest of the world that does not apply. But the specs we received mentioned continuous recordable time and actual recordable time. The actual recordable time was always half of the continuous recordable time. What is the difference between continuous and the actual?

Panasonic:
The camera will record up to four gigabytes of video in a single file, and then automatically make a second file when the first one is full. There's no gap when you play back the video, though. The actual recordable time is the length of video that can be recorded in a single four gigabyte file, and the continuous recordable time is that which can be recorded in eight gigabytes, spanned across two video files. Once eight gigabytes has been captured, recording stops. [Ed. Note: This 4GB per file limit is due to the FAT32 file system which is used by most modern cameras.]"
