I'm Feeling Slow - 2011 Cinematography Reel

Hey guys, I finally forced myself to make a reel and wanted to share it with everyone. It is 100% Canon DSLR ranging from some of the first clips I ever shot with my 7D a year and a half ago as well as some 5D and 60D sprinkled in. Would love to hear your feedback:

Nice! xD

Nice! xD

Really nice work! congrats! can I ask how did you managed to get the shots so steady? I would love to achieve that steadyness!

Thanks. Alot of stuff was on a tripod or dolly and then typically on all my handheld work I try to always use something like a shoulder mount rig or a zacuto rapid fire and a lens with image stabilization if it works for that scene. I have the shakiest hands of any DP I know so I'm always looking for tools to help keep my shots steady.

Wow....That's all I got lol. I'm actually picking up a 7D next week and I keep coming across stuff like this that re-assures me I'm making a good choice. Truly beautiful work man.

Chris, you have some strong content here. Your dolly/slider shots are some of your best, so I would move those up to the front of your reel (where you really want to grab your audience and potential clients). I'm not hooked right away, and I felt like I needed to sit through the whole reel to get a sense of your capability and style as a DP.

Some of the shots are not that interesting or compelling in a DP reel, like the static shot of the train as people get on and off. If you do use it, I think you could cut it sooner. Overall, I think this reel could be 2 minutes or less. You wow me, but then you kind of lull me to sleep, and I'd rather walk away wanting more than feeling sleepy. Not saying the music or style of shooting is bad, but I think you can hit us harder with your best work, get us in and out, and then bam - end on your name and contact info. 90 - 120 seconds MAX.

Usually, reels are a constant work in-progress. I think you have a nice collection of content to offer that describes you and your style, just note that the more of a tease it is, the more I want to find some of your work or look you up to hire you.

There is some merit to the idea of keeping it short. Fine work though. Love the slow and languid movement. What lenses and what Picture Profile do you shoot with?

gorgeous mate. no comment whatsoever from my end. i love the pace. the shots can breathe it's like they have ample space in between. i loved this.

Thanks guys!

Everything in the reel was shot with Canon L series glass, except with a few shots with the EFS 17-55 (my go to run and gun docu lens), and a few with my first lens - Tamron 28-75. On most of my recent projects the Canon 35 1.4 and the 100 2.8 macro IS are my main go-to lenses.

As far as picture profiles it depends on the situation and how it's going to be processed in post, but my default is a custom profile based on the neutral setting with sharpness and contrast all the way down, and saturation down a tick.
