I'm not sure if RED will deliver the Scarlet before the Mayan Calendar expires, but it looks like their little competitor has beat them to the punch. 1920x1080 - Super 16mm Sized - 230mbs RAW codec, makes this camera a player. And it actually exists now. Bravo! It looks like approx 8000 euros for the Cam + Card Reader. If the Euro Dollar drops a little more, we Americans might be able to grab one of these bad boys for around $11,000. Anybody wanna buy my HVX200 with 3000 hours on it? LOL (that was a joke, don't put me in the marketplace section).

The camera looks great, however your pricing calculation is a bit off. You also need to buy lens mount, Super16 lenses (if you don't have them), plus the biggest money spender will be media cartridge. One dive gets you only 25 minutes of footage, so you'll need at least 2 or 3 for any location, even if you offload in the field. So over all you are looking at about 12K for a working setup.

How different is this camera from the one they put out a couple of years back? So far the only difference I believe is on board recording.

They make a small non-reflex super16 camera, but I dont think they have ever made another digital camera. This is their first one AFAIK.

little overlap

little overlap

There is this interesting interview to one of the members of the Ikonoskop team. He looks very honest, doesn't care about marketing or trying to sell you stuff. He looks like he wants to talk about film more than about how his little camera is going to perform in this very competitive digital video industry.

Some fresh air in an environment where Hollywood aesthetics, corporations, and silly commercial tv rules everything. And I have to say that many of the technically knowledgeable guys that I found in the, so-called 'independent' digital film scene on internet, well, they seem to love that kind of commercial aesthetics (Vincent Laforet's silly piece 'Reverie' is a good example of this).

And people who have a different understanding of what film is all about aren't typically very skilled with the computational stuff, so there seems to be little overlap between these two communities. So I am happy to see this little company of cameras having such a different approach to digital video, and the possibilities that this new technologies could offer to us. There is more in film than hip-hop videos, special effect films, or silly stories that only aspire to entertain.

Oh finally its out. I takes longer to make it but first one is here. Wish you good luck.

It's not big enough... I won't look as pro on set with it. Better load it up with matte boxes and fallow focuses. ;)

You're right, I left out the lens mount and an extra media cartridge. I could make it work with 2 media cartridges for film and music video type applications. This camera is the wrong tool for reality TV or a long concert.

6990 Camera
990 Media Cartridge #1
990 Media Cartridge #2
990 USB Reader
750 PL Mount

Ok, that puts me over 10,000 euros, but it's still cheaper than a P2 Varicam or a Red MX body.

Where is the best place to find Super 16 lenses? Right now, everyone is chasing down 35mm still photo Nikons and Canons, but where have all the super 16 lenses gone? Ebay? Is there another place to find them?
