IKAN VX7 or VX9?

Food for thought:

I have a 7 inch totevision I have had for several years. It is not color accurate, but for focusing it is a gem. It also features an all steel housing. For me, that was the selling point and has proved itself worthy on several occasions where plastic would have failed miserably. (like a drop to concrete from 5 feet) It was around 600 US dollars.

Cons on Both: I could be wrong, but one thing that both the Ikan and ToteVisions share in common are the PC Board mounted BNC Jacks. Some of the other, more experienced manufacturers have Jacks that are wired to the PC Board instead of Soldered to it. That is a much better design. You will never break the Internals yanking on a jack. Jacks are twenty times easier to replace when wired not hard mounted too.

IMHO ONLY, I have not seen the latest Ikan's up close, but they seem overpriced for the purpose. A small 7 inch monitor is something I only use for focusing, framing/composition, and Luma levels. Color accuracy is nice, but not important for shooting.... Use a larger sized monitor for that. Most of your current camera LCD's are very color accurate anyway. If I have balanced in advance, color should not be a concern anyway. I just need to see what the heck Im doing. Focus, Frame, Luma Levels, Composition,... Just the facts for me. 600 bucks got me that.

The ToteVision that I have has a DVI connector on the back, No HDMI, so I just use an adapter to chage the HDMI to DVI. Done!!. The Tote will also run off of 6 volts through something like 16v DC. A HUGE HUGE HUGE PLUS when working in the field. I don't know what the Ikans consume to stay running, but You might want to consider that too. I'm not suggesting the Tote is better or worse. Just offering food for thought.

Just curious... which monitor did you end up going with? They have a wider variety now...
