Hi!

I am actively looking for a monitor for my HG2. I am using some sharp manual lens and am having issues with focusing and got to the point of realization that I need a bigger badder better screen.

I have stopped my search to 3 monitors. I am looking for something no bigger than 5" or 6".

Ikan V5600 $502.19 http://goo.gl/WZCYE The screen is of a higher definition matte screen but other than lines contrast and brightness, you don't get any tools.
Marshall 5" $474.05 http://goo.gl/doX67 The screen definition is inferior to the other but it has a 1:1 mode and false color among other things.
SmallHD DP6 $899.00 http://goo.gl/8VbeI Great screen and a lot of tools false color 1:1 etc but soooo expensive! (almost the price of the camera itself.)
Sony CLM-V55 $399.00 http://goo.gl/G1kBc With zoom function. Uses sony batteries (sold separately) No exposure or color control

The SmallHD is too pricey for now for me. So the question really is between the two others. So is it better to have a better definition and no gizmos of a smaller zoomable screen with false colors etc... ?

I am also open to any other options. I am planning on feeding the power from panasonic batteries.

it really depends on how youre going to use it. for my uses the small hd has features that fully justify the price. so my advice would be save a little more money and go that way.
its by far the best use of your money.

but if youre just looking for focus help. you might look even cheaper at the ikan VL5. i was in their offices the other day and played with it. it has the focus assist stuff and looks pretty good.
id call them and double check that the v5600 doesnt have any focus assist features. as it seems odd not to have ANY...

the sony? it has 1:1 pixel and focus assist :) incorporates volume meters and a hood, hdmi mini cable nd support :) PRICE: 400 dlrs

You are absolutely right! I am going to go with this one. Beside, I already own a couple of sony batteries from my PD170 so no problem. Thank you @improser !

I have a couple of sony batteries in my house in france (I only have panasonic batts with me in NYC), but I will only be there around Xmass so I am planning on waiting for then to buy it. If looks really pro messing tho.

I bought the Sony CLM-V55 today and after first 2 minutes it looks good for me. Will post a full review sometime this week after some unscientific tests!

The Sony is the way to go if you don't need critical color. I have a review of sorts on here somewhere. Reds are a bit off. Other than that I like them.....I have 2.

I went with a dp4 evf to save the money.

I like my dp4 but for it's main purpose of helping me achieve critical focus, it has in some ways failed.

It does work and like it... But I don't love the results!!!

I was at a wedding, even though I was able to get focused shots for the first time since owing my 7d, It was harder than I thought when using peaking and the focus assists. I think my issues are mostly user errors, and I'm sure with more practice I would get better.

But i can't help to think 1280x800 would help even more! Dp6...

I'm actually selling my dp4evf if anyone is interested so I can fund a DP6. it has very little use, because I'm not a pro. I just take jobs from friends to buy more equipment.

I ended up getting the SmallHD DP6. It is amazing. The crocus assist is super sharp and works much better than the one on the Marshall. I end up using the focus assist more than the 1:1 option (except for
Highly critical focus like macro and other super shallow depth of field)
The false color is brilliant (the gh2 changes the image from hold to record but it is still fairly accurate and ca be used in replay. )
Plus it lasts 6 hours with one Panasonic battery (from the HVX200 not the gh2 battery)
