If you're planning to get Creative Cloud on a monthly subscription...

Another "If you..." thread - thought this might be useful to some people.

We bought the monthly subscription, thinking we'd give CC a spin - and, if we didn't get on with it, we could cancel.

After a few months, we decided to go with FCP X, so we tried to cancel CC, thinking it was one of those 30 day notice things.

Seems Adobe like to play the small print game - turns out it's an annual agreement and they were quite hard-nosed about keeping us to it.

I escalated it, but heard nothing back for 3 weeks. It seems they've now relented - they sent us an email out of the blue, saying we go on to the "free" version next month.

Just putting it out there, in case you thought, like me, it was a rolling monthly subscription. I don't think they make it very obvious.

It's a lot of software for the money, I guess, but always good to know what you're actually signing up to.

Ben.

Ah, good thing to point out. That's why I just buy and don't mess with the subscription stuff.

Just asking ...but why do you post non related AF100 stuff in the AF100 Forum?

This is your second in as many days.

Good question. I hadn't really thought about it.

I guess I think of this forum as a community of like-minded people, many of whom are on a similar journey to me, budget and tech-wise.

I've shared a couple of things recently that I wish I'd known before learning the hard way - eg rewrapping MTS files and the Creative Cloud.

I don't personally have time to peruse numerous forums - and I guess I mistakenly assumed that was the same for others.

It's all contributed in the spirit of sharing and helping others in the same boat.

Also just asking - does it matter? Isn't all of this just a huge resource that might be useful to some now and can be subsequently searched for by others in the future? Does it matter that information converges in multiple forums? I ask, because when I'm searching for opinions, I get taken all over the net. It doesn't personally bother me what forum I get taken to by Google - it's the key words that lead me there.

What do others think?

Ben.

I think it's very relevant to this forum - the "digital reveolution" has many plusses, but it also brings about a lot of questionable "services" and products. As an AF owner, as well as owner of several other cameras, I'm happy to have this valuable inormation here rather than lost in another forum I'd likely never see. The subject line makes it specific to those who might be interested, and it doesn't take any valuable space from other subjects.. Not interested? Don't read it.

I understand the instinct to think of the AF100 forum as home. I do. I think the benefit to posting in the other forums is so that people more directly interested in editing will find your suggestions, questions, etc. Things intertwine in production and post, and there is no fine line. But this forum is for the AF100 and there's a whole other one for Premiere Pro where your suggestions may be even more helpful.

Well Shooter, if you think about it your Samurai update thread from 2/21 wasn't really specific to the AF100 either. You might have figured that a lot of AF operators use Atomos- so it was relevant. Much like the OP figured many AF users here use CS6.

Perhaps we're missing a prefix here... sub-forum.
I don't think shooter meant completely different forum, but instead the DVXuser Premiere sub-forum?

Either way, it works for me here, I have CC, haven't tried to cancel it, but thanks for the fine print, Ben.

That said, what in particular got you to change from Premiere to FCP X?

I knew about that when I signed up. It's not exactly hidden.

Useful insight, Gary. Thanks mate.

Hi groveChuck. Apart from various minor issues, such as ineffective snapping, dropped frames on playback and various other small irritations, it was mainly a gut feeling to go with FCP X. We had just had a commission of 15 films 2 months ago and I was determined for us to move on from FCP6 because of the threat of OS update implications, so it felt like a good point to make the break.

I'm at a stage in my career where I'm seeing huge exponential changes. I've been doing this since 1987 and the digital revolution is breath-taking. Premiere seems like business as usual - just gradual iterations of the same old, whereas FCP X feels like the designers are really grasping the implications of new ways of working. They've also questioned some of the habits we've got into as editors and have taken a brave, sideways and lateral look at NLEs - I like that and, while change is painful, I like people that question the status quo.

I've worked intensively with all of the major NLEs since Lightworks first appeared in the late 80s and I have always found the switch from each quite painful - I'm quite impatient and I hate not having a deep and transparent knowledge of my editing UI. So, the next step is a gamble.

I was on a panel of speakers at a UK industry event last week called the Digital Production Partnership - they're bemused and fascinated by my switch from being one of them to being a one-man-bandit - and the UK Apple Pro Apps rep came and had a chat with me afterwards. They seem really committed to making FCP X work and they recognise that they got it really wrong and were very arrogant when they released X. So I'm hoping my gamble will pay off for us as a company - I've also got one eye towards younger editors who work for us and what system they're going to be using. With CS6 costing £600 a year and FCP X costing £250 as a one-off fee with free updates at the moment, I know what I'd be using if I was straight out of university with limited funds. I have a guy cutting synch pulls for me out in Australia at the mo and we're exchanging clip proxies and edits quite happily over the web.

Ben.
