F5: Ideal lens solution for F5 & F55, review Canon 17-120mm servo

Poor model had them test the macro function on her less then perfect skin. Ouch.

Great lens, look forward to renting it soon

I've shouldered that combo and it's a great set-up. They had a Dionic battery on it, so it was way too front heavy, but if it had had a Hytron 140 on it like I normally use, it would have been as close as you can get to a perfectly balanced ENG set-up in the s35 world this side of a real ENG cam or an Amira/Alexa. And even though I've only played with the 17-120 at NAB and about 5-10 minutes a few months ago, I REALLY like it.

Ides it on a F55, love that lens. Outdoors you hardly notice the fall off towards the long end either. In lowlight situations it's different of course.
How did you power it on the Epic, straight through the mount?

I produced this lens review. I was expecting the worse with regards to the weight as I heard a lot of people talking about this issue, but it was absolutely fine to work with, camera felt nicely balanced actually with the shoulder pad pushed forwards a little and v-lok battery on the back helping too. It would be a great investment in my opinion. Sparky

I didn't hear it mentioned anywhere the speed of the lens. I did see what looked like speed ramp @ 1:46 pulling back from the zoom the exposure got brighter, the Sony F3 oddly enough had a TLCS feature which could compensate for this by automatically adjusting either gain or shutter speed… too bad this feature never made it over to the F5/F55 (as far as I know it hasn't).

It looks like a great lens, and nice review.

.

Dennis, I've been lobbying for this feature on the Sony community website, to be added in firmware v6. A few have commented that 'auto' anything isn't compatible with a cam like the F5/55. Nonsense, I say. I use 'auto gain', with a 1-stop constraint, on my FS700. It's the bomb for those zoom lenses with variable aperture/zoom. Maybe if others add to my request, Sony will listen.

While the lens is big i agree with the most of the user sentiment here, it wasn't that heavy. Especially considering what the lens is doing and whats packed into it. Compared to Fujinon Cabrio or Zeiss LWZ lenses the Canon is pretty svelte.

ng smith, your totally correct, thank you for siting those statistics. As i stated, "considering what the lens is doing and whats packed into it...... is pretty svelte." Not that it's specifically lighter the Cabrio. The Canon offers over 30mm of additional focal length. I don't have the measurements in front of me but, having used both, the Canon is skinnier, specifically where the hand grip is mounted. This puts your hand closer to the center of balance. Both are great lenses and i would use ether with out hesitation. My subjective stand point was that when you combine the additional reach of the Canon with the skinniness and the balance of the grip it was a tight package.
