IBC 2016 Sigma Cinema Lenses

A superficial criticism, but that labeling of the focal length is garish. Particularly on the zooms. And is it really necessary to list the front diameter, filter diameter, etc. on the lens? Graphics overkill.

Interesting lenses, but nothing the does anything for Run & Gun or 90+% of the shooting that takes place.

Where's the 4 lb, 12-180mm, f/1.8 servo zoom I put in a request for?

I kinda got into it today on Twitter with Matt Duclos and Dan Chung. Here is my essential argument on "near-Parfocal":

It is a distinction without a difference.

No zoom lens is absolutely Parfocal. There is always some slop in the system, and there is an allowable tolerance to this characteristic. It's known as the Zoom Curve, because as it drifts away and back from the absolute perfect spec, the motion as graphed represents a curve. If a lens is within tolerance, then it is Parfocal.

A lens design may not be Parfocal in that even at its absolute theoretical performance it has zoom curve drift. So this lens could never achieve a perfect Parfocal performance of not drifting at all throughout the zoom range. But that lens might have a zoom curve in its mathematical design that still is within tolerance for Parfocal performance. This is what Sigma is calling near-Parfocal.

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck. If a zoom lens performs the zoom curve test on an optical collimator bench to within the standard's tolerance, then therefore by jove it is Parfocal.

Anyway, that's my opinion on the matter. I was up way too late last night trying to explain this one in 140 characters or less.

Any guess as to why someone would say the Sigma Cine primes are not "real" cine lenses but the new Tokina Cine primes are? [ hint: Red user forum ]

My guess would be that they work for the company. As far as I know a cine lens is simply a lens optimized for a professional workflow. So the housing, markings, gears, and throw would lend itself more toward that type of workflow.

There are some there issues at play. The Tokina lenses were purpose-designed for cine use as opposed to being stills lenses that then had the housings redesigned for cine. The Tokina lenses are specifically designed to color-match one another, and also have matching contrast, flaring and other image characteristics. This is not necessarily true on a stills lens, as there is no intercutting with stills like there is with motion picture production.

Another significant issue is focus breathing, which is when adjusting the focus alters the image magnification, making the lens appear to zoom. The Tokina primes feature a zero focus breathing design while the Sigma lenses are known to breathe considerably in both the primes and zooms.

These are all characteristics inherent in the optical designs of these lenses, so forgetting the mechanical aspects mentioned (housing, marks, gears, focus barrel throw), there are definitely aspects of the glass that can make a set of lenses more appropriate for cine use.

Not sure if this is a typo but your EF kit for these lenses are $501 more than buying them individually on your site. Just a FYI.

I heard the primes will be about 2-3k per lens. I see the zooms are 4k a piece. I wish the rokinon ds' looked like these, I saw one poster doesn't like how obnoxious the numbers are, but I do! Bigger is better! haha. I think they look bad-ass, they def have a cine 'look'.

Canon Rumors are hearing through a very reliable grapevine - possibly Marvin Gaye - that Sigma will introduce a 24-70mm ART at the CP+ that starts February, 23 in Yokohama.
