iamlosers short

Re: iamlosers short

Any tricks to getting the great DOF that you got?

Re: iamlosers short

Now THAT was a fantastic short film. Can't say enough good things about it so I'm not even going to try. The minimal production time only adds to it's impressiveness.

Three thumbs up and big toe! ;D

Re: iamlosers short

hey thanks again guys. i really appreciate all your comments... ill work hard to keep you esteem :) hey john! maybe i will send it to triggerstreet. i have an account there.never done anything with it though.. i need to judge a couple shorts first though so that i can upload mine. i also need to get my rear in gear for the dvx short contest .. only 2 weeks left.

oh yeah..settings, uh most of it was shot in 24pa.. and the rest in 24pn all of it was supposed to be in 24pn but i forgot to filp the switch.. i noticed right bfore the end ...doh! settngs are my default film out settings- detail -3
cinegamma -on
cine matrix- on
master ped- -6 at 0 ire
chroma phase -4
all others standard for the scene file, but it did undergoe some quick color correction in post, so really all of the settings are somewhat muted.

Re: iamlosers short

Awesome work. Great work with the V/O wording. You really did capture the feelings and emotions of this.

Re: iamlosers short

Hey iamloser,

Did you use your Azden SGM 2X on this thing? I've been looking for the best mic with the most flexibility at the lowest price. I have no money yet (buying a DVX this week) and would love the free shock mount and the two-mics-in-one that Azden offers. But when I start to buy the Azden everyone around me cries, "Stay far away." But I've found a few professional reviews that say the SGM is not that much different from the AT in the price range or the Sennheiser m66/k6 combo. Both are more money and less flexible and come with fewer accessories. What do you think? Did you use the SGM as an omni for your narration in this short? Are you still using it as a boom?

Thanks,

Everdene

Re: iamlosers short

..i actually used the SGM 1x for this to do the narration. the 2x is better for boom pickup cause it converts to a supercardiod and therefore more directional but wasnt really needed since i was doing the voice over right in my studio at the computer. i use the 1x alot on the boom as well. it works fine. ive never really had any issues with it. the other mics are better of course, but for the money, its certainly not a bad mic. i think people frown on azden cause its more of a pro-sumer brand mic ,than a real pro mic. and when it comes down to the wire of pushing your audio.. the other mics are better performers. but really i think industry people tend to look for problems with the azdens.. and overlook issues with the other name brands.. you know how that goes.. anyway.... like i said , ive never had any issues, and i think it can get some great sound. i dont think theres a real huge difference between the 2x and the others. ive got to live by the "if it aint broken.. dont tell me it is" rule . meaning if someone were to blindly hear the audio from all three of the mics you mention, and not be able to pick out the azden as inferior, then dont tell me it is. or dont tell me which mic is better becuse of statistics, or readings, or any of that other stuff. for me it all comes down to what does it sound like, and how easy or hard is it to get it to sound good all the time. .. not technically, ..but realistically. anyway sorry for the rant.. im not an azden rep..lol. if you got the money, get the best mic you can, but theres nothing to "run away from" about the azden brand of mics imho. but of course you should really see if you can test out the mics if you have a dealer near you and see for yourself if the quality holds up to your proffessional needs.

Re: iamlosers short

Thanks for the honest Azden reply, ial.

Great job on this short, by the way. The flicker/old-movie look at the beginning and end was a little too much for me on a computer screen (would probably work fine on a television monitor), but I loved the rest.

I haven't made a decision about that Azden, but it would save me some money and should perform fine so I'm seriously thinking about it. People might say that I'm a loser for using it or that it will show a lack of professionalism or knowledge. However, we use some fairly crummy old mics for professional jobs here at the studio I work for and our clients don't know the difference. Like you said, it depends on if it gets the job done. It also depends on who you talk to. If you're in a heavy duty sound forum, then all of us become losers for using the cheap AT and cheap Sennheisers. There's always someone who will look down on your gear. It doesn't matter what you're using. From what I keep reading, though, no one will really be able to hear the difference between this Azden and the equivelant AT and Sennheiser.

Once again, rocking short. Keep up the good work and never let the gear go to your head!

Re: iamlosers short

Hey dude, great short. Very emotional. The actor reminded me of Dinophrio(sp?). I use the SMG-2x also and it works fine for what I use it for.

iamloser... I am Lou, Sir... iambic pentameter...

That was a very nice short.
Your VO helped make it so.
;D :o :D 8) ;)

Re: iamlosers short

... there was no prep. I just didnt have any time to do any. i knew the basic story that i wanted to tell, and kindof what i wanted to show for visuals, and then the guy showed up at my door.

thanks for the comments though guys, im really glad you enjoyed it. :) the interesting part is that the actor in it still hasnt seen it... i'll have to show it to him when he's over for the next redthrough and see what he thinks. hppefully he wont think i wasted his time that afternoon..

Re: iamlosers short

Great story, and really well shot.

Were you using a mini35mm adapter of some sort on the parts with the beautiful depth of field?

So imagine hes says . . . hey I hate myself in it . . . dont show it to a soul! errr only 290 views on dvx user site !

Re: iamlosers short

it was all shot on the standard dvx lense with and without the anamorphic adaptor. .. as to the actor.. well i dont think he would say that even if he didnt like it. but it was also projected at that theatre with about 100+ people, and he knew it was made for that. ive known him for quite a while, and hes really cool, he would probably just say " man i look like an idiot", and then id have to bring him here to dvxuser, and have him read all these insights on the short. (which by the way- i ran out of money to pay you guys for being nice to me.. so if anyone else wants to say somthing nice.. it'll have to be for free)
