iamlosers short

this was a short i did sort of spur of the moment for a 48 hour film kabaret. the film had to be somthing about flight. i figured id throw it out here to share. i spent about 5-8 hours total start to finish so certainly dont expect the world... we had about 2 hours to shoot, and a few locations to rush to , so i shot it all handheld for quickness... so sorry about the shakey camera work. if i have more time next time ..among other things, ill certainly use my stabilizer system. anyhow, feel free to share your thoughts on it.

this file is roughly 38 meg and streams at apx 456kbps..sorry 56k people. you can right click and download if needed. i did put a smaller low quality version up, but the site its on isnt working right..

Re: iamlosers short

48 hours... arrrghhhhhhh :) I have been working on this 30sec spot for a local music store for 3 days.. Yikes i need to get a move on :) Of Course you are much better at this than me . i'm still shooting closeups of y wife's eye and firetrucks. Saying "man is this camera cool!". your out there shooting shorts I'm shooting the pizza delivery guy :)

Hey, I liked the short for several reasons. I like the way it shows that ( to me that is. might not have been what you where thinking) Inside us all there is something that wants to break from the norm to break from Escape this mortal coil.
Anyway thats what I got out of it.

ps he should buy an ultra light :)

Re: iamlosers short

>>The narration really keeps you attached to it.

yeah forgot to mention that.. the narrator was good and I believe gave feeling to the film..

Re: iamlosers short

Looks good! Good storytelling. Great time to go to slo-mo.
How much did you pay those geese to fly over at just the right moment? :D

Re: iamlosers short

That was awesome.
There were a whole bunch of things going on here that where just amazing.
First, the story. Excellent writing and scene depiction. I actually almost cried when he threw the plane in the air, and it slowly crashed to the ground (sorry to ruin it for anyone who didn't watch it yet).
Second, scene composition. Absolutly wonderful, each shot looked well planned (even though you said it wasn't) and the shakey camera was actually not a distraction at all, it fit with the fell of the movie completely.
Third, your actor. Not so much the acting itself but the guy you got to play the (sky coveting kid). He looked like the vin diesle type of action star, but at the same time wanting and expressing his sensitive feelings that all of us share, the will to fly. Excellnet choice of character.
Third, the narration. It had a good tone and helped move the story along, I did notice that it was a little bit on the bassey side through my studio monitors and sub woofer, but it was still easy to understand and well picked up.
The only criticism that I have is that the very begging and ending scenes, with the "film like" footage of the plane flying almost gave me an epeleptic seizure. The grain and film dust is fine, even a little bit of jitter, however it seemed to me that I was focusing more on when the picture was going to cut our and leave me blind, than what was actually going on, on screen.
Oh, by the way, great music.

keep up the good work

Re: iamlosers short

That was a great film, what software did you use to edit it. I loved it soo much, looked so pro there. Man, reminded me a bit of some parts on the movie Trainspotting, that was great. Good luck with it!

Re: iamlosers short

Loser are you shooting with an Ana adapter or croping in post? Good job! and good luck! 8)

Re: iamlosers short

IAL, is there a way you can post your movie as a quicktime?
For some reason, I can't play windows files. I do have WMP, but it's been funky on me lately.

Thanks.

Re: iamlosers short

well.. ill try to answer any ?s quickly

michael: yes, i did have that in mind :)

brad: the geese werent actually there.. i had shot some footage of them last fall , and intercut the footage fo those couple shots... :)

scharky: sorry bout the skitzo "old film effect" i just applied a preset, and said "good enough..no time to tweak it".. it really is a bit too much.. espescially after i added the flicker to he bginning to simulate the reel starting up :)

skettalee: i used ppro and p6.5 with the matrox rtx100 extreme :)

elvis: this was done with a combination of ana, and crop in post, pending the type of shot, and which would serve me better.

ecoloco: i can surely put up a quicktime sometime within the next week or so.. im not sure whenill have time.. im using someone elses webspace, so i need to work all that out with them. :)

and thanks everyone for  the kind words. means alot to me the actor showed up at my house to do some readthroughs for my feature, and i asked him to do this quick. he was wering all black so i threw the jacket on him. and we went to town. the narrator is me trying to sound like what the charachter might sound like.. i didnt have a script, so i just sort of said what i felt like saying from my own feelings when i narrated it in realtime. i also did the music in one take . in the middle my little girl ran up to the synth, and hit some low keys, and i stumble for a sec on playing , and trying to get her away from it, but it turned out ok.  there was nothing to win from this. but i did get to see it projected in a small theatre with about 100 or so paying customers who all clapped, so that was all the payment i needed. it was surely fun. and ill surely be doing it again, and hopefully with more time. :) thanks again everyone.

Re: iamlosers short

damn.

i don't know if i should feel inspired to get off my ass and do something creative or wallow in self pity that i'm not worthy!

submit that sucker to film festivals, i have only been to the local film festival but they have shown some real crap and what you did was amazing. everything about it, the narration, the video work, the music, editing... everything!

Re: iamlosers short

I have been watching these posts for a month or so now and will be getting a DVX this summer. Can't wait to begin posting my own work. Thanks for the insights and opinions.

iamloser, you're self-deprecation is topped only by your humbleness. (Granted the nature of the forum would not allow much for arrogance) You have kept the tone of the shot consistant with the narration and story. It all worked together, especially considering the time spent. I like films that create room for personal reflection. In this film the audience has the opportunity to think in their own terms from perhaps a slightly new perspective. The perspective of the grounded flyer. This little ditty consistently had an emotion, and a movement, and an element of humanity throughout it's core while most shorts I've seen fail to connect with "realness" this well. Me likey.

Re: iamlosers short

Hooray for Iamwinner! Fantastic, provocative, emotional, and stirring-all in one! THATS what I'm talkin' bout.
Curious-which settings did you find working for you?
