I wonder what SONY is thinking about now...

If Sony were one person, I imagine him with a blank stare saying....Oh, I f.#%ed up!

Has there ever been a product like the HVX200, that totaly dominated the market?

Having a sony camcorder would be like being a felon. I can't see anyone actually admiting it.

Sony is having a tough time, they recently moved headquarters from Japan to New York. When Japanese owners send their baby overseas...something is really wrong. I hope Sony gets it together quick, we need them.

See, here's the thing -- if you want to know what Sony's prosumer camera division is *really* thinking, it's probably along the lines of "just how stupid are Panasonic and JVC -- why are they wasting time and money developing 24p? everyone knows that the only thing anyone wants is interlaced video."

That's the problem -- that's how they think. So until they change that mindset, their products won't reflect what the users want. Maybe a year or two of getting pummeled in sales will bring 'em around.

and most people don't care. They buy a Sony camcorder and go on vacation. Sony has plenty of business

Why does everyone give two sh*ts about what SONY is doing. I might be young to this game, only 19, but the only sony products Ive ever owned have been total crap. This includes a DVD burner, a Vaio, and still picture camera which promptly died 6 months into operation.

Panasonic gets my dollar because it is the tool I use to make my movies the way I want to make them. This brand allegiance thing always bugs me. I dont use Apple because they dont run the tools I use to do my work (3ds max)

Sony for the last 5 or so years has been missing the ball that smaller companies (not in size, in market share) have been eating up through listening to customers. If you dont believe me can you say ATRAC and MicroMV?

Panasonic I think is really throwing their cajones out into the wind and being a consumer oriented company with this cam. No more undercutting their large systems, this thing democratizes filmmaking.

Now only if we could decide on a way to make distribution as easy.

also, have I mentione how much I hate Cineframe :-P

yeah, seriously, prosumer cams also seem like they are small potatoes compared to some of sony and panasonics other interests, no?

"According to data from Intellect, a market share analysis firm, Sony's market share in the camcorder DV industry went from 31.29% in 2003 to 31.79% from 2003 to 2004, a growth of only half a percentage. While Sony continued to be the market leader, Panasonic made a huge market share gain from 11.03% to 18.25% and Samsung grew from 8.46% to 9.92%. While Panasonic's gains were mostly at the expense of JVC, Sony failed to make any major market share increases."

Man I love Sony TV's. I just bought a new HD Sony. I bought a Sony Hi-8 years ago. It was a good camcorder. It still works. I have a Sony Digital 8 a bought a few years ago to take on vacaction, kids play's etc. No problems.
I wouldn't feel bad about buying a Z1 either. Safer than a Canon. But I hope this HVX turns out to be "the" camera. 16:9, 24p, tape and P2.

Just a small part of their companies. But an important part.

Boy you dudes just love slinging ****. Sony/JVC/Sharp/Canon came up with HDV and it is a good codec. M2T will go directly to the satellite for broadcast which is HDV's native format. I am not on board with HDV but it is a good solution and one that has been embraced by more than sony. CBS went with DVCPro but nobody else has and they are all still on Betacam SP.

I'm all for this new camera, believe me, but Sony and Matshushita are too diverse to do anything to each others business. Panasonic makes great copiers for cry'n out loud and Sony makes computers.

What does FOX use?

the reason Im against HDV is the mpeg compression. For all the work I do (visual effects) it knocks out any hope for high end compositing, extracting larger dynamic range etc. I remember trying to edit on the DC1000 which capture dv into mpeg streams. what a complete nightmare, even on a dual processor system!

HDV is great for alot of markets. Id probably spring for it if I wasnt doing heavier work. God knows this P2 is gonna suck price wise. I just am more comfortable getting a clean, "f***able", image up front and then letting the comp do compression etc for whatever distribution.

Anyways. Im in school now at Va Tech. They have a 1 million dollar comm building and nothing in it. few trv 900s, few light kits. gateways with premiere 5 (ouch). For students this cam is a delight because now I have access to image quality that you could only get at an NYU or a USC. Plus its about 95 grand to go to either of those places for four years.

Ill take Bob Rodriquez's advice and just do it myself. I think alot of people on this board can understand this sentiment.

This is simply incorrect. FOX has embraced DVCPRO and the 720p format like a wildcat.

Your school also has the worlds largest PowerPC970/Apple G5-based supercomputer!

NO ****ING JOKE DUDE!!!

Im glad they spent 5 million to run MatLab and fluid dynamics about 10 hours out of the week.

You do not know how many times Ive placed proposals to turn that f*cker into a rendering farm for 10-20 hours out of the week.

This is a large, mismanaged, state school, that happens to be super cheap.

If they spent as much money buying some equipment for the art and comm depts as they do on "hokie football" they could have themselves some scorsese and lucas's to give back to this place. Its not like we have any buildings donated by Marcus Vick.

@thisiswells-Talking broadcast NEWS here hombre. As for FOX, I forgot about them.

@filmfan22-DC1000 days were good to me. Straight shot from analog to DVD. I know what you mean though. You couldn't do much more than front end color adjustments and that was it. HDV still leaves artifacts when zoomed which I don't like.

DC1000 was just sluggish as hell. however, it did cap 422 @ ML which made some compositing easier than DV. It also didnt multiplex mpegs which was a pain in the ass.

ive been trying to get rid of that thing for as low as 50 bucks for like 2 years now lol
