I wonder what SONY is thinking about now...

Though "Filmmaking" with video cameras is a slight but growing piece of the market
I'm sure consumers vacations and news gathering still makes up the greater part of the the videocam market, and for that interlaced is fine and Sony sells a trainload of cams.

however, the game is now changing. I am convinced that Sony will respond with either

a) a software-ish upgrade for the z1 that makes more "progressive" footage
b) a low priced "mini-alta". Soney has some codec options they can go to that are superior to hdv, just like Panny does.

I expect a response before the HDX comes out.

Sony is´nt know for cheap cameras; if they make a "mini-alta" probably they will make it 1/2 CCDs shoulder mount, for around 15.000$... IMO sure!

And for a software upgrade on Z1... I thought they could do it; probably the cam is ready for it, just waiting the moment. But in a a same price range... It´s a looser, they´ll have to price it down. And then i will wait to see if Pana has manual controls, HDD option... I´m sold, you know.

Let´s see... I wonder what JVC is thinking about now... Too!

They're saying:

"Don't hog the toilet paper, Sony!"

Seriously, a mini-Cinealta would be the way for Sony to bounce back from this. $12,000 with 1/2" CCDs, interchangeable broadcast lenses and XDCam blu-ray disk recording with 1080/24p and full out uncompressed 4:4:4 output. That would also rock.

Jrv, awesome!

I don´t know, maybe we are expecting too much about Sony... I think they aren´t very customer friendly.

But i wouldn´t buy Sony shares. I rather go to Pana! Even JVC wil beat them.

Yeah, but the HVX would still have the edge on frame rate. Just like the Varicam, over the Cinealta. But exchangeable lens and 1/2" CCds should more than make up to it. You could rent a HVX if you need slow motion. But sony will NEVER, yes, repeat it with me, NEVER do it.

For students this cam is a delight because now I have access to image quality that you could only get at an NYU or a USC. Plus its about 95 grand to go to either of those places for four years.

more like about 160 + any film fees you encounter...

I can't wait to pay off bills for the rest of my life... yay!

Well Cody you had the misfortune of being able to pay for it in the first place :-P

my dad is unemployed, got a twin brother at cornell, a younger sister, so my 10 grand a year total is pretty nice. I dont even have to take loans.

lets just say that Robert Rodriguez's "Rebel Without A Crew" is a favorite book.

Sony has its followers, but it's just a brandname thing, and if they don't shake things they will only have the professional market left. As much as progressive scan doesn't interest consumers as much as indie makers, Sony will have to look into it sooner or later. The only reason regular people don't care is that they have no idea about what they are buying. They pick their cameras for the number of stickers they see at the store and the megapixel count, without even asking how big the chips are. Really, see how many camcorders are available around €500, and they are coming out with new ones every few months! Any you look at all of them, there are dozens of them from just a few companies, and they all suck the same! What'S the difference between a pocket Sony, Panasonic, or Canon? What's the difference between a new Sony and the model from last year? Of course some are really a little better with more features, but in the end they all suck.

One day one tourist will come home with a Panasonic camera and the video will always look better then the tape filmed by his brother with a Sony touristcam. When that happens all the time, the word gets out. Also, I see more and more tourists printing frames from their video. Of course, when they have moving subjects, they always ask what those lines are. Sooner or later they will hate interlacing too.

I know scores of people who have stopped relying on the brand name Sony....simply because Sony has f....d up thinks so often. Now they are hesitant to buy any thing with that brand name simply because they know ..."oh beware...:Its a Sony".

No joke.

Sony now is only electronics similar to competition, but with +30% price tag for the brand name. By the way, there is another market for 24p cameras, and that's for consumers that want to be able to send a DVD o their family and friends to another country where the TV format is different. Of couse consumers don't know that yet, but I think it will be much easier for DVD programs to burn NTSC from PAL footage when it's filmed in 24p.
