I think the upper fan is the input cooling fan, and the lower one is the exhaust fan. see page 196 of the C500 manual.
I just want the OEM-looking black panel they were using to mount the fans to the C500. That part looks like it is part of the camera.
I'm going to try to build something similar but lack the skills to make a custom part. Need to figure out which is the exhaust and which is the intake!
Seems a shame to use gaffer tape on such a fantastic camera, but at the moment, that's the solution.
Hi Oliver
Yes, I own a C500 with Shogun Flame so 4:2:2 10 bit at 4k ProRes and also a C100 (which I love). Re-creating the fan solution is very simple and I notice there are better 35mm brushless fans out there, specifically the Noctuas which are virtually silent. The tricky part is trying to remake the C500 'hugger' solution. This will cost me money as I can't DIY it but I'll pay someone to get it done. Will do all of this when out of bed with flu...
Pourquoi?
Paul
Thanks Mitch. I agree that the double fans idea is nicely done and I think it's worth retaining in any similar build. It's also good to know that I could lose one of the fans and retain 80-90% of the efficiency.
My build will be rather different. I'm using two standard 9V batteries (1.7" x 1") to power the fan(s). If I run them in series at 18V, I could power one 12V fan for many hours. If I run them separately with two 5V or 6V fans, they would also go for a pretty long time. The batteries will be attached between the fans so there are no wires going anywhere and, most importantly, no need to use my V-lock battery and plate on the C500/Odyssey rig, which is heavy enough as it is.
FYI, I ran both fans on a single 9v battery for 1hr and 40mins, the battery did not run out.
Ned,
I agree that we need some lav mic tests . . .
I just bought the C500, and out of the box it roared, those cooling fans are loud. Doing interviews on location or the studio and having these fans on would be a pain in the ass! A producer, or director, would turn to the cameraman rolling the C500 and say "is that fan going to stay on during the interview" dealing with some celebrity interviews, or sensitive medical, or high end corporate boss interview, you just can't have a fan noise going off like the fans cooling the C500 in 2K or 4K. Here in LA, I have never worked with a louder camera noise than that of the C500. I get my modified external fan unit tomorrow, and if it works and keeps those bloody internal fans from going off, I will keep the C500.
My sound package is a Sound Devices 302 mixer, with a Schoeps MK41 with a Cut 1, my wireless system is a Lectrosonics 210 with Sonotrim lav mic, and Sennheiser MK2, I usually have a sound recordist with their own package, they usually have the sanken COS 11. I like the sound of the boom (Schoeps) it has more bass and depth, it seems to sound more natural to my ear? the Lav Mics are good most often concealed, and sound a little muffled, both of my Sonotrim, and Sennheiser lav would still hear the fans of the C500.
Bellow is a comment I got from Shane Hurlbut ASC on using the C500.
The fan was a major problem. On Need for Speed which was the first feature shot with this camera we had Canon re work their firmware so that it would give us about 8 minutes. But this all depends on the heat in the room. Many takes on the film were compromised because the fans came on and we had to cut. You take the good with the bad sometimes. I would not suggest this camera ever for an docu/interview camera.
It's gonna be pretty expensive over time if you keep running these fans off regular batteries. At least set yourself up with something you can recharge!
That is great to hear. The 6-pack AA should be a nice setup, but where are you placing the battery pack? I want everything self-enclosed in one fan/battery attachment that I place on the camera for occasional use and I would not want wiring going anywhere.
...so with such a great axe like a C500, why pair it with something meh?
