I want to watch a great movie tonight, any suggestions?

Great lists, excellent variety, but don't believe I saw much foreign other than than Cinema Paradiso and Amélie.

I highly recommend Rififi (France 1955), one of the best caper movies of all time, and the best French film noir (it is their word, afterall).

Orson Welles:
The Stranger (1946)
The Lady from Shanghai (1947) (the famous hall of mirrors scene)
Touch of Evil (1958) The best B picture. Ever. Famous opening long take tracking/crane shot.

You have Amélie, don't skip Caro and Jeunet's sense of style and story in:
Delicatessen (1991) (one of the darkest comedies ever!)
The City of Lost Children (1995)

I just had a noir fest, including:
Chinatown (1974)
The neo noir The Usual Suspects (1995)
L.A. Confidential (1997)

I love David Mamet:
Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
The Spanish Prisoner (1997)

I think Terry Gilliam is a genius, an original, always swings for the fences even when he misses. I especially love:
Time Bandits (1981)
Brazil (1985)
The Fisher King (1991)
12 Monkeys (1995)

You have The Godfather, don't forget Coppola's
The Conversation (1974)
Apocalypse Now (1979)

You have The Shining and Full Metal Jacket.
I did a Kubrick fest, start to finish, last year. What about
Killer's Kiss (1955) (noir)
Paths of Glory (1957)
Dr. Strangelove (1964)
And 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), only Kubrick's tour de force and pièce de résistance? (and an 11 in my book).

Happy viewing!

I'd recommend looking overseas for some new films. Try OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies. That's a film that would never get made in Hollywood, unfortunately. It's very funny and laid back.
