I want to go up early in the morning and film deers and stuff in low-light conditions, preferably from a great distance. Am I an idiot to believe that a lens capable of this can be found for, say, under 500 usd?

No, doesn't have to be zoom. No, doesn't have to be new. (And yes, I *do* need fairly good low-light capabilities, though ofc not shoot in the middle of the friggin' night).

Enlighten me :o)

Mirror lenses have awful quality and are always slow...you're better off with a cheap Vivitar or something like that (they still suck though.)

For under $500 you're not going to get anything longer than 150mm under f/4.0...usually...depends on how good the lens is.

I have a Vivitar 100-300mm f/5.5 that I got for $30...I mean the optics aren't great, I wouldn't use it for any serious work, but I got it just to mess around with and it does ok. But really it's a shi*ty lens, I knew that when I bought it and knew I wouldn't be using it for anything too serious.

Good and Cheap is a dichotomy - I believe you can have one or the other but not both. Ben and Morgan are both right. I just gave my son, who is heading off to Canada to shoot bears, an older Vivitar reflex 500 f/8. Who knows - with greater ISO sensitivity and noise reduction in today's digital cameras, it might just work.

NIKON 300mm f/4.5 AIS Nikkor.. Buy this one.. On the canon it is a 480mm F/4.5 lens equivelant.. You can get the lens for $100 on ebay and get a $25 eos adapter... Incredible glass and insanely cheap.. These lenses sold for over 1,000 when they came out.
