I wanna run my HVX-200 into our HDCAM deck?

Hi all:

I am hoping that there are some bright minds out there. Here is the situation. I shoot a LOT of long interviews. Until the Cineporter or Firestore are available, is there a way I could shoot interviews with the HVX-200, running a 25' firewire cable to another room close by so that the fan noise from the HDCAM deck wouldn't effect my sound on the interview?

1. The HDCAM deck records 1080 60i. Could the HVX-200 somehow output a hi-def signal that this deck could record? I am confused by the whole codec thing between the two devices. Would the HVX-200 have to output an HDCAM codec signal to be recorded by the HDCAM deck? Would the HVX-200's component analog outs work? Obviously, recording component analog wouldn't be as good as HD-SDI, but as we all know, the HVX-200 doesn't output HD-SDI.

2. Isn't there a box that can turn the HVX-200's FW output into HD-SDI? Or does this box not yet exist?

Should I just drag my Powerbook in and record to FCP 5.0 instead? Same idea although my FW drives have noisy fans. I would probably have to stick the laptop and drives into the other room. The other mitigating factor is that my laptop has FCP yet we edit on AVID here. Can Xpress DV Pro take in an FCP QT file?

This will all be so much easier when the Cineporter and Firestore become available.

Educate me and tell me how you would do this.

Thanks,

Dan

Forget firewire, you'd use an analog component -> HDSDI converter, and then run a long HDSDI cable to the HDCAM deck.

Any of the HVX's 1080 modes would work with the HDCAM deck. You can also have it convert 720 into 1080, but if you're recording direct to HDCAM you might as well shoot 1080 in the first place.

You could use the Powerbook as well, you should be able to work with a high-quality 25' firewire cable to get a little distance from the fans.

Almost sounds like a job for the XLH1...

Yeah, this does seem like the perfect scenario for using an XL-H1. Direct HD-SDI to an HDCam deck at 1080. Puredrifting, do you already have an HVX?

Hi jrv:

No HVX-200 yet, but we have three on order and paid for so hopefully it won't be too long. No way we would get the Canons, too many negative experiences with the XL1s and we really like everything about the HVX-200. We shoot a lot of long interviews, but we also run around a lot of tv and film sets as well so the P2 thing and having the capability of the DVCProHD codec when we are shooting in the field is essential.

We have been using the Z1s for about 6 months and hate them, cannot wait until the Pannys to arrive.

We have an HDCAM deck and are going to be buying a D5 deck as well since a lot of our clients have their assets on D5 so I suppose we could run the HVX-200s into the D5 as well. But those D5 tapes are expensive.

When you shoot with the HVX-200 into a Powerbook and FCP, do you need FW800 drives or are regular firewire 400 drives workable? I can't imagine a FW400 has enough throughput for 1080 60i? Or even 1080 24P? Or is the DVCPro codec so efficient that you can do this?

Yeesh, choices, choices.

Dan
