Dumb question on the floor...

When you guys are talking about color correcting... Are you talking about actually correcting colors because something is no right, or are you refering to just achieving a certain look?

Sorry guys... new to all this.

Color correction comes in two forms:

1. Actual correction of colors due to bad white balance, lighting conditions, processing, etc.
2. Enhancement after the fact, emulating filters that could have been placed on the camera during the shoot, or shifting for style as we're seeing in this thread.

Either way, you use the same color correction tools to do the job. Color correction, secondary color correction, and scopes.

I saw the video and instead of trying to emulate it, I just went another direction. I chose to do super desaturation with high contrast.

Bob,

I used a combination of FCP tools and Digital Film Tools stuff. First I just adjusted the dynamic range a bit, crushed the blacks a little, raised the whites a little using FCPs three way color corrector. I then finessed it a bit more with a proc amp and dropped the chroma a bit (which i would make back up slightly with DFL. I then used Digital Film Lab and started with one of their presets, which I tweaked a bit (this included some saturation and chroma adjustments, some gamma adjustment and some white diffusion). Then I added a very, very small about of grain. I kept playing with these factors until I got a basic look that I liked.

To my eye the biggest "video look" thing, is in the latitude. When I see a real hard, high contrast look, to me that is video. So I try to bring the dynamic range into an area where to me it looks more like film.

After I did that I added to graduated color filters and different opacity. From left to right there is a plum grad and from top to bottom a (if I remember correctly) magenta grad. I then used DFT Light! pluggin to add the shadow of the tree, not that it's necessarily appropriate to what your shooting (could be, I don't know) but add more depth to the scene which I would have done on set with lighting had I lit the scene.

That's about it, glad you liked it.

I like Matt's the best. It's creative. The diffusion may be a bit much but overall I like the look the best.

Who's the girl Bob? She's cute and she looks nothing like Norm.. :)

okay, here's my attempt:
AE: Adjust Levels, Desaturate, sharpness, color gradient with hue overlay.

It's not the "Norm Look" but its just something different. Word!

guys, this thread is way too funny. I've come back to it after a few days only too see how crazy you all are..

"ooOOH, I like yours Norm"
"oh, let me take a stab at it."
"I love color correcting."

I'm wondering what our actress thinks of it?!

What exactly do you find funny, folks working at honing their craft and trying out different looks on a reference grab??

WTF, or are you too cool for that man?
