I took the Plunge

Wow, looks like I kicked a hornets nest.

I actually learned Avid while at school, and while yes it's powerful, the sheer number of disk issues, and driver issues, and deck communication issues I experienced really turned me off to Avid. FCP has been great, if I need to do some work in Motion I just click and boom I'm in Motion, to finish I just click and boom I'm in compressor.
While I'd love to cut out the need to transcode, it's not really a pain, just time consuming. However since AVCHD seems to be taking off quite a bit, and FCP overdue for a new version, I'm hoping AVCHD editing becomes native in FCP in the near future.

Also when I do finally get a new desktop, which I really need also to run a capture card for other projects with, as my current tower doesn't have the power to capture in HD. I do plan on using Bootcamp, and I'm sure I'll be giving Edius a try, but I got a feeling it will only be a try as I ike to total package of Final Cut Studio.

Let me jump in here about computer choices and editing software choices...

I've seen battles occur over MAC vs. PC on other boards; which is so strange. I'm not sure why people have such strong feelings for one or the other and can't accept that another person may make a different choice. It really does NOT matter what another uses, as long as they are happy with it.

I don't mind people talking about the different choices; as well as the pluses and minuses for each system. I do watch closely to see if things get a bit heated and anger levels start to rise. At that point, the thread would no longer be productive and myself or one of the other moderators will have no choice but to lock it.

I hope everyone understands that I'm just trying to guide people to avoid getting into arguments that might upset others.

Thanks,

Bob Diaz

Got it today!! It was rainy out today so I broke out the tripod and gave it w spin shooting some footage of our salt water fish tank. All I gotta say is I'm blown away. Since I've never been able to shoot 24p thats what I went right for, had no issue using doing log and transfer in FCP, everything imported nicely and I was abel to assemble a quick timeline. I had some hiccups with FCP not playing back via my TV, though it would display the frame I was stopped on, I'll have to figure out why, but on my laptop everything played out very smooth, and playing the clips back via Quicktime on my TV looked great, can't wait to get the timeline encoded and playback via my PS3.

A couple things I did notice, hooking the camera up via HDMI to my TV doesn't playback 24p correctly, my TV can handle 24hz as I watch Blu-Rays that way. I see some people issues with the touchscreen, but I've dealt with worse.
I do love Focus Assist.
I'm waiting on the timeline to encode so I can post on Youtube. I've never encoded anything longer then like a minute let alone from a 1080p source, and the export time is a bit rough. I'm 12 minutes in and still 40 minutes and increasing to go. I'm hoping 720p footage won't be as bad, if anyone has suggestions on how to speed up exports let me know.

Here is my little test the wide shots aren't great, but the close-ups look great.

I think I pretty much tested every possible conversion setting in Compressor, and it seems on my laptop it's going to take a bit of time. I did try encoding as a Blu Ray and playing back via my PS3 looks great, can't wait to get a real machine with some horsepower to cut down on the conversion times.

your problem is not the compression, your problem is YOUTUBE SUCKS!
get a vimeo account, you can upload raw MTS files and they will convert them for you...

If you want to speed up encoding of H264 video for Vimeo or Youtube you could check out the Elgato Turbo.264 HD encoder. It is a little USB encoder that accelerates H264 encoding from Apple applications. I personally have never used one but it may be worth checking out and at $150.00 is much cheaper then a new computer. Maybe you can find some decent reviews of the device.

Yes that does look great, but thats one clip, not exactly a real world scenario. And while yes I can export a great looking and quick exporting clip from Final Cut, neither Vimeo or youtube accept Pro Res or AIC or any other Apple codec.
Does anyone have any great looking and decently speed encoding settings for youtube/vimeo?
