I think I've Decided on my camera.

So after many years of working with very low end cameras and perfecting my craft with post production in the process (after effects and premiere pro) I am finally able to get a new camera. For years I drooled over the Xl-2, but have recently settled on the DVX100b. Partly because of the threads I've read here, and partly because of the price. I am mostly interested in shooting independent movies. Some will be horror, with low lighting. Others will be at the other end of the spectrum. I need a versatile camera. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into whether or not this is the best camera for the purpose I have described. Any suggestions, ideas, insights or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for being such an informative forum of highly knowledgeable people.

You've obviously done a lot of reading up to come to this decision.

To be honest, the best camera for your purposes is one that you feel you can use with ease and comfort and can use to best tell your stories. Period.

Thread after thread around here demonstrates the still-impressive power of the DVX to capture stunning images in the right hands. I think you'll be pleased.

I still think it outshines many many HD cameras. Pixels are sooo over-rated - the DVX100b, particularly the PAL model, is a suberb camera - it is now legendary. It has few faults for what it is and none of any significance. The ability to adjust most aspects of the image is the key.

I think, like most who have bought one, you'll be glad you did.

It's interesting that you say this because I was Hellbent on getting an HD camera at first. Then I started doing alot of research, and figured it would be more hastle than it's worth for me. Considering most of what I want to do will be released on SD DVD's and I don't plan on doing alot of Sporting events, weddings, etc. I'm sure I'll eventually upgrade to an HD camera but for now, I think the DVX100b will do the trick. So many happy users can't be wrong.... or at least I hope they can't be :)

Congrats. In my opinion, you've made a wise choice!

I've had my DVX100B for two years now and still love it. Up until now, I've only done pretty simple (not challenging) online educational video.

The truth of the matter is that the DVX100B makes what I do simple. I recently had to step in to help pull a rabbit out of a hat and the client supplied a Canon XL2. Nice camera, but the experience made me realize just how great the DVX100B really is.

In fact, for some reason I'm now motivated, re-energized and realize that I have all of the tools to do what I want to do which is to create an Indie movie. I'm planning to do a short to run the camera and myself through the paces first.

Enjoy your DVX100B and I look forward to seeing some of your work and hope to share mine in the near future!

I, too, agonized over the selection of a camcorder for my filmmaking. After years of working with (expensive) 16mm film and editing on an editing table, I finally decided to move into the Twenty-first Century and go digital.

There were three things I had to consider: Cost, performance and image quality. I needed an affordable camera that was dependable and gave me good image control. I also wanted to reproduce the kind of image I like from 16mm film. After considering the offerings from Panasonic, JVC, Canon and Sony, I decided that the DVX100B was the camera for me. I bought mine in March and I have been more than satisfied with my choice.

The DVX100B does precisely what I wanted from a camera. I cannot even imagine me going to anything else. Except, maybe, the HMC150 in a few years.

Truth be told, I'm still cranking my DVX-100A. And I love every day that I get to go out and shoot with it.

The DVX100 series really changed everything in the sub-$30,000 camera range. 24p, cine gamma settings and more, all lead up to a fantastic camera. I love that 5-6 years later, it's still kicking butt. You've made an excellent choice with the DVX100b.

I second that.
