I simply can't focus my AF100 with it's build in FA. Need on camera monitor advice.

The housing is different between the two panels. On the DP6 the dial and 2 buttons are on the top. I see other differences as well. Though the TV Logic does look like it has cool features as well.

I'm biased because I can drive 10 minutes from my house if I ever have a problem :) Which I haven't yet, because I never have, but still, at least a little piece of mind for me :)

TV Logic offers a monitor that seems to be based on the same panel and housing as the Small HD, the VFM-056W.
That really does look pretty darn good. But - it's only a six-bit panel... Please let us know what you think of it when you get it. I think it's quite tempting, but I don't know if the 6-bit res would annoy me too much. Also, no mention of weight?

Barry,

Both the Small HD and TV Logic LG sourced panels are 6-bit. They use dithering to make the panel look more like 8-bit color depth(hide banding). The TV Logic has 3G SDI, waveform, vector, false color, luma check, aspect ratio markers, embedded TC and audio meters displayed. Originally there were two models, just as Small HD has a $100 upgraded version, but now TV Logic has gone with a more feature rich version for the US vs. what they shipped to Europe in December.

I like that the inputs are at the bottom of the housing, not the top. I'm trying to get them to come out with a battery bracket for AF100/HMC150 batteries, waiting on word about that. TV Logic accessories cost more than Small HD, but unlike the latter, you can product discounts, depending on the reseller.

Keep in mind both the image and the menus are flippable on the DP6 and it's got 1/4-20's on all sides, so theoretically it has no "top".

Well, I like a lot of what I see in that TV Logic model. I'd probably be up for a group buy. I like my BT-LH80 just fine, but it's too big for on-camera and it can't be powered by little camcorder batteries. The TV Logic seems really fairly ideal, assuming the pic looks good even with the 6-bit display.

I'd be in for a group buy on either, but I think I'd prefer the TV Logic based on what I'm hearing here. what is the exact model number? VFM-056W?

Just talked to Lisa at TV Logic. The person in charge of large buys is currently on a plane to Korea, but she'll get a hold of someone else that should also have an authoritative answer. FYI the VFM-056W is currently back-ordered by two weeks.

I'm okay with waiting 2 weeks for something like that. Heck, I waited for 3 months for the camera! Thanks for checking on it for us.

The only concern I have for the TV logic is the buttons on the back. This is what I don't like about my DP1X and what I love about the DP6 is that the buttons are in a MUCH more easily accessible location. Trying to find the right button can be a pain when you can't see it and all it is happens to be a little dot :)

And yes, if you look at the DP6, the logo on the front is actually flipped on one side because you can use it with either side up or down on the long and flip it in the menus.

Not to get off topic, but does anyone know if there are any Z Finder type options out there for use on the onboard LCD? It's a pretty hi-res lcd isn't it? Just trying to find a possible solution that costs less. :)

I might be interested in a group buy too. Just have to figure out my budget. This camera is getting more expensive by the day. LOL Can't wait for the Birger mount either.

An LCD shade/hood would go a long ways in improving the stock LCD, but... as relatively flimsy as the LCD arm is, attaching something like a ZFinder/LCDVF would put some serious torque on it, something it was never intended for. I can imagine a scenario where a shooter attaches a finder, and either bumps it in the wrong direction, or bumps the camera lens into something while shooting (the shooter's head hyperextending the LCD arm), etc., and tears the LCD right off.

A possible solution would be a hard mount / some sort of solid support / scaffolding / cage for the LCD, to which then a finder could be attached. Better still would be an EVF.

So I have this kit without the eyecup:

And since it works with the 7D/5D LCD which is the same size as the AF100 LCD, it should work fine. It worked great on my 7D other than the fact that hooking it on the camera was a pain. For this, the Zfinder is MUCH better.

I am going to just build a piece that slides it over the LCD with some brackets with felt on or something, with a friction fit. I also want the eyecup but before I do all that, I am still using the EVF that comes with the AF100. It's really good as well.

I agree with everything about the EVF and flip out screen. Worthless. One monitor I REALLY like is the "SmallHD" field monitor not only because it's super high res (native 1280x800) but also because the entire case is built from a single block of metal so you can drive over this thing with a car and it won't be crushed. That's really important when considering hours of banging it on stuff and thrown into bags. Also, there's an option to have HDSDI bypass so you can use this as an external monitor if your cam is up on a jib or you can run your signal from a single line to your SmallHD montor and then onto your Nanoflash or viceversa. Finally, a lot of field monitor have these HUGE batteries than hange off of the back that weight 900lbs but the batteries for the SmallHd minitor are super thin and stick flush against the back. It's a slick design!

+1 here for the TvLogic monitor group buy.

I'll update the thread (or start a new one?) if/when I know something.

Very good point! Just one repair would pay for the tv logic LCD. Ugg Looks like an external LCD might be the best bet here.
