FS7: I returned my XDCA-FS7 Extension and 7Q back to BH

As far as NYC and safety... Some of the characters & situations in "GIRLS" & "Louie" have disabused me of the notion of living in NYC far more than any real violence.

That being said I love both shows.

AND if you haven't had the Cereal Pretzel shake at Milk Bar, then you truly haven't lived.

LOL... I see some of you have a sense of humor. That's good.

Actually, I want to move to Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Was thinking of starting a GoFundMe for that purpose. I would make a documentary on the trip and publish it on Youtube. Need about a quarter mil to do it. Involves building a Japanese style home, but with modern energy efficient technology and modern amenities. I'll need to rely on new money infusion, because I doubt I'll get much from the sale of my existing home in CT due to the back taxes assessed against it.

Yes, I won't enter any city or state that does not adhere to US Constitutional laws. Those are rogue states.

It's not necessary, with the internet and freeware RMAA software anyway. Anyone can test a camera or other audio device and post the report.

Before deciding between the 7Q+ and Shogun, I rented both and did a number of side by side comparisons. With regard to the screen, the Shogun had a magenta push that I could not adjust out. Further, its focus assist added a faint layer of color to the entire image, not just edges (depending on which color you chose). And to my surprise the Odyssey's 720p screen delivered a sharper image than the Shogun's 1080p screen. I could only chalk that up to the difference between a fantastic 720p panel vs a not so great 1080p.

Believe me, I did not want to fork over the extra dough for the Odyssey and was rooting for the Shogun when I did my side-by-side. But after 20 minutes, the added expense was nothing compared to the difference in build and image quality. my 2¢.

Posts have been deleted. Trains have been attempted to be put back on their tracks.

Look, guys, we have a couple of very simple rules here. One is, no personal attacks. Believe it or not, that actually does mean no mocking or attacking someone for political beliefs that you don't agree with.

Two, no politics. Period. Well, exclamation point, really. And yes, that actually does mean no politics even if it's something that's really, really, really important to you, like the impending collapse of the world or whatever. Take it somewhere else, it absolutely doesn't belong here.

Three -- one link in your signature. If you're going to have a commercial link, it's got to be either to your own production company, or you have to be a paid sponsor or moderator. So having four or five links, including to various businesses, and including to your own political opinions blog, is right out. And yes, that rule applies even if you've been here a really long time, and nobody's complained before. We don't catch everything. We don't like being put in the position of having to play "gotcha" by hunting down every possible rule violator. We expect you to behave and play by the rules, and when something's pointed out to us that doesn't comply (as this thread was pointed out to us), then we do step in and fix things.

Thanks for your compliance.

After 20 minutes hunting down a rules page, I found none. So it sounds like you just made this one up on the spot.
Most forums have a FAQ page with the rules. A few state up front 'no commercial links', but most do not. Some try to make up the rules years after the fact (AudioKarma.org comes to mind) and a few others and I take a dim view of those who do that. But in all cases, I've never, NEVER had someone ALTER my signature line. That is way out of bounds. I'm not adverse to blogging about such breaches of trust as I did here about another board 7 years ago: http://japanradio.tripod.com/

If I were a real SOB, I would sue you, if for no other reason than to deplete you financially, out of spite (even though the suit would have no merit, as the board is your property, to do with as you please). I'm sure you know what a SLAPP lawsuit is. But I'm not an SOB. I may be grouchy, sometimes bitter, but I'm still a rational being. And I will say this, you need to have an official rules page that is not so well hidden that a casual look won't turn it up. That rules page must be very specific about the matters you wish to regulate. If it's signatures, you need to spell it out. For 8 years I have been on this board with no issues pertaining to that. And rightfully so: there aren't any published rules about signatures at all. I did not see any when I signed up in 2007 and I still cannot find any after 20 minutes of exploration around the boards. The FAQ is generic, written by the board software programmer and mentions nothing about signatures.

These guys did a comparison between the shogun and the Odyssey, they chose the Shogun over the Odyssey.

They are DSLR guys with somewhat different needs and desires.

Anyway, one thing I was very dissappointed to find when recording 4K on my Odyssey 7Q+ is that it center crops a 4k image to UHD. Our Buddy Matt says that will be fixed in a firmware update but maybe not the next one.

GROSS OVERSITE.

I could maybe understand it if it was a ground up new unit but the 7Q+ is based on earlier models and should not have been released if it could not display the signals it can record.

Y'all have some fun this weekend,
Robert

What unique needs and desires did these guys reveal? It was a comprehensive review of both units, with their pros and cons. There was nothing described in regards to dslr needs.

We don't crop the recording, it is only the monitoring that showed the 16:9 center crop of the 17:9 frame. In a few days the new firmware update will have the option of a 17:9 letterbox view of the full image on the 16:9 screen. And we will also send that letterboxes view out to other monitors via the SDI and HDMI outputs, which no one else does. Either way, the recording is of the full frame.

I just ordered a 7Q+ this week for my A7s so I can do 4K with it, and I'm really looking forward to it arriving next week. I don't own a Shogun but I do own a Samurai and there is no question in my mind as to which company build superior products. I've seen the 7Q+ in person a few times and it has always amazed me how the screen looks and all the features the pack into such a small device. In fact think CD should take the next step and start building a camera around it.

Apologies, I meant to say it crops the display.

And, as you folks may know from some of my other posts, I am otherwise a fan of the 7Q+. It is a pretty cool piece of tech.

It's the 30th so I am looking forward to the update. Would of course rather it be right than released on time.

It would be nice if Sony would give us 4K out of the two SDI's so we don't have to use the HDMI. BTW, I have not had any trouble with the mini HDMI adapter falling out but I have only used it with the cam on a tripod.

Thanks for the correction Our Buddy Mich,
Robert

They were not interested in using SDI and higher end codecs/raw for example. Things that many folks with pro cameras are interested in.

And they did not understand the advantage of certified drives.

Y'all be cool,
Robert

You do realize the Shogun has those connections? It also has an xlr connection for audio and a full sized hdmi port. I don't know about you, but I hate mini hdmi ports and 1/8 audio inputs. It allows for changing parameters while recording too, I don't think the Odyssey allows for that, it also has a vector scope.(I know the odyssey doesn't have that) The shogun is also getting firmware upgrades for those raw codecs for sony, canon and arri.

I've had my 7Q+ for a few weeks now and really only have good things to say about it. The OLED screen is excellent and plenty sharp for achieving critical focus. The tools for focus, metering etc are first rate. LUTs work like a charm. But what I value the most is that CD has made a product that has a reputation for extreme reliability. This goes for the stability of the software, to the technical soundness of features and the pre-tested enterprise class media that doesn't drop frames. You can't put a price tag of that kind of peace of mind.

What parameters are you referring to? What would you like to change while recording? I can't imagine you would want to change the codec or something of that nature. If you are referring to the various monitoring functions, like Pixel Zoom or Focus Assist, or any of the exposure tools, such as the Waveform or False Color, then OF COURSE YES you can adjust those while recording. They will not alter the recording itself.

It is true that we do not yet have our Vectorscope enabled. It will be soon, and when it is the Vectorscope will include features that make it a far more functional tool than the competition's iteration.

Unlike the competition, the Odyssey7Q+ can accept video signals over not just one SDI connection, but dual-link (two ports) or even quad-link (four ports). That's how a camera such as the very popular F55 can output true 4K to the Odyssey7Q+. Currently there is no way to get true 4K out of the F55 and into the competition's device.
