i need a small camera to go with my a1 for times when the a1 is just too obtrusive
something i can keep in a large pocket / small bag

ive been reading through the forum and the canon hv20 comes up alot

can you recommend this? will the footage match well with the a1? can i match custom presets?

any other cameras worth a look?

thanks

The HV20 is a great little pocket camcorder, and the footage can also be pretty damn good.

However, this is a consumer camera with far less in the way of custom presets and customize functions. The menu system is a little cumbersome and there is no way to independently set Aperture, Shutter Speed and Gain. You can set Aperture + Shutter speed, but the gain is automatic. There are a few sites around the web that explain how to better use the HV20.

So, can you match the custom presets? I would say that is a NO, but then how many consumer cams let you do this anyway? If you could get all of the A1 functions on an HV20, why would people buy the A1?

thanks

i understand what your saying about matching the A1 but will clips mixed look bad in comparison or will they blend ok?

i plan to do my long shots on the a1 but close shots on a smaller camera

its water sports footage im shooting but i want to add out of the water conversations / general sillyness

does the hv20 shoot best in auto then?

hows the HG10 compare?

Don't know about the HG10, sorry, but I do shoot an HV20 from time to time, but I never shoot in Auto!

Yes you can mix and match the A1 & HV20 output in post, but if you are using custom preset on the A1, it may mean a little more work in post to get the to match evenly. It is doable though....
