I need a short jib

Hi all,
I have a job coming up that will probably linger for about 30 days total production time. I won't be shooting every day, so the spread out days make it kind of hard to rent equipment.

The bottom line is I need a short jib that I can mount to a Bogan 3068/516 tripod, and that will handle the weight of an HPX500, field monitor, and battery.

Can you make some recommendation for a decent setup that won't break the bank?

The only experience that I have with jibs and cranes are the larger 20' Barber Tech's, but I don't need anything like that - probably 10' would be all I am interested in.

Thanks,
Brad

Kessler cranes come in 5, 8, and 12 foot sizes and most here agree that they are the best bang for the buck. There is a used 8 foot package in the marketplace section for $400.

That's cool Chris, though Im still holding out for the pocket jib/dolly. That things going to save me a tonne of time.

Noel, you'll want to check our carbon rig out..sneak peak over here. :-) The jib integrates a 100mm bowl which can drop onto any existing "sticks" but has its own precision bearing for both pan/tilt. The jib is designed optionally to work with our "Atlas" linear tracking system which carries a weight capacity of about 200lbs over 3 ft and 150 or so over 5ft (the LTS). The 5ft rails would give you a fluid movement "box" of about 6'x7'x7' in one setup. In other words you'd be able to integrate "slider" as well as jib shots at the same time. How short is short in terms of a jib?

Dennis,
Wow, if that jib packs up small and is lightweight, that would be perfect for hiking up around Yellowstone etc. Would bring a whole new level to my shots.

Any more info on price and availability? Email me if you need someone to take it out in the field. :)

The machine shop is working on it right now. We expect it to be ready in 4-6 weeks. Once we are closer to completion we will begin taking pre-orders for the first release of Pocket Jibs.

Wow! that looks very cool. But it probably won't be ready by the time I start shooting the second week of September. However, if you would like one of your prototypes field tested, let me know.

As for how short? I won't need more than a few feet total height just to add some interest to the shot. I will be working around a car that will be in the studio.

When will you be revealing pricing information abou this new unit?

Thanks,
Brad

OK, I went with the Kessler, and I must say; HUGE bang for the buck!

This is the 5.5' configuration, so I can simply stand beside the crane as opossed to behind. This thing is as smooth as glass.

Note in the second image, that I was still able to mount my zoom and focus controls, albeit in kind of an unorthodox location. But by standing beside the crane, everything is right where I need it. At some point I'll get the proper controls, but for now, this works well. :-)

Thanks for the recommendations.
