16mm is 40 frames a foot/ 36 feet a min. 400ft = 11.1min recording time.
35mm is 16 frames a foot/ 90 feet a min. 1200ft magazine = 13.3min
HVX 8gb card at 1080p = 8min - not bad.

Not only that but if you have a bad take with P2, you just delete the file and reshoot. With film, well you just wasted film.

I don't care what anyone things,,,,,it will record 16:9 on tape. It will probably go for under $5,000 when it hits the streets. Then the P2 price will go down or I maybe talk someone into investing and I can buy some.

HVX with three 8GB cards at 1080p = uninterrupted (conceivably eternal) recording, with no scratches or dirt, and no lab processing and telecine for editing in NLE ... PRICELESS

I think he was referring to being able to record in real 16:9 in SD mode on tape..

if not then crack consumption has reached a critical level..

Crack Cocaine is the leading cause of preventable halitosis and stupid behavior. But damn if it don't get you higher than Mother........ when using it!!!

But yes, I'd seriously hope the HVX would record 16:9 in SD mode as well as HD mode, or we might have a problem.

I'm not a cheerleader for anything, and if I come to this forum it's because I like this community, not because I'm a fan of any brand or camera. Sony and Panasonic have their own marketing departments for that. When the FX1 came out, I had no idea when Panasonic was going to release their HD cam. I thought it would have been 2 years later, and some people might remember I was praising Sony for being there now, so that I could work with High Def now. I never liked the compression or the interlaced chip, but was ready to accept it until something better comes out. Now Panasonic came out with an excellent answer only a few monthe later, so I have no problems selling what I have and buying the new Panasonic. I don't always need to have the best, but I need a high definition camera with a good format, progressive scan, and a few other features than Panasonic offers. In those conditions, I think I can use that camera for years and won't need to change again. But honestly, I wouldn't care to change from one brand to the other if I felt it was better for my work.

but 400' mags of 16mm and 35mm run closer to eleven.
A 400' mag of 16mm film will run for 11 minutes, yes. But 400' of 35mm film goes by in about 4:30. You need a 1,000-ft magazine of 35mm to get about 11 minutes of filming from it.

So a movie shot *digitally* in 24p then transferred to a 35mm print and shown at 24p doesn't render motion like a *celluloid* film shot at 24p? O....K.....

I'll have to take the Pepsi challenge on the High-End Digital vs. Celluloid argument.

Perhaps - but for work like Commercials/Music Videos/Industrials that won't be going to film out there is a major difference in motion blur.

Then again - if you have the funding to film transfer and know it from the beginning then hell, why not shoot on a CineAlta?

I do agree this is a wonderful camera though

The difference between high def and 35mm is still apparent, even at the 100 million dollar budget level. Even the might sony 950 doesn't have the same amount of information as 35mm, but it will happen eventually.

Roberto Rodriquez might be able to make movies rapidly, but only when he has a script are they any good. Sin City was amazing, since the movie was storyboarded already by Frank Miller, so that helped.

This new Panny is going to shoot downright amazing footage at an incredibly cheap price, but people still have to realize, this isn't a Best Buy cam anymore. HD, in any form, is going to be at least twice as expensive as regular DV. If you can't pony up 10k then it's not the arena for you. If you want varicam footage for 3k then you'll...ummm have a wait a few more years.

But we still have loooooooooooong months to wait to get ahold of one. Bummer.

THANK YOU!!! Really. It's a breath of fresh air to hear such a clear perspective on things. We need more reality checks like this around here. :)
