I just said f#$k

So with the new forum make-over, did we drop the "poo-pooing" censorship? In the past, curse words in the extreme end of the spectrum have been automatically substituted with 'poo-pooing'. I just got excited in another post elsewhere and said 'f#$k' in it's entirety and correct spelling. When I posted the response and re-read it, the word was still there, clear as day. I of course censored it for good reason, but has there been a change in policy? Or is David just making the mod's work harder by reading every post for f-bombs? :)

^^^ Ok, it's apparently been reactivated now.

But seriously, I'm not crazy. Either it was a glitch not censoring me, or David is now making me look crazy. :P

Ah, I remember when they started that. We were all a bunch of foul-mouthed bastards and there were kids around, so they had to control us.

My understanding was less for the teenagers already here and more for the search engines out there. So a bunch of F-bombs wouldn't link to DVXuser, or when you googled DVX it wouldn't show a bunch of F-bombs in the preview text. You know for like professionalism and sh#&.

EDIT: guess sh@$ does not activate the censor.

I love words. I thank you for hearing my words. I want to tell you something about words that I uh, I think is important. I love..as I say, they're my work, they're my play, they're my passion. Words are all we have really.

We have thoughts, but thoughts are fluid. You know, [humming]. And, then we assign a word to a thought, [clicks tongue]. And we're stuck with that word for that thought. So be careful with words. I like to think, yeah, the same words that hurt can heal. It's a matter of how you pick them.

There are some people that aren't into all the words. There are some people who would have you not use certain words. Yeah, there are 400,000 words in the English language, and there are seven of them that you can't say on television. What a ratio that is. 399,993 to seven. They must really be bad. They'd have to be outrageous, to be separated from a group that large. All of you over here, you seven. Bad words. That's what they told us they were, remember? 'That's a bad word.' 'Awwww.' There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad Intentions.

And words, you know the seven don't you? ****, Piss, poo poo, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherpoo pooer, and Tits, huh? Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that will infect your soul, curve your spine and keep the country from winning the war.

****, Piss, poo poo, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherpoo pooer, and Tits, wow. Tits doesn't even belong on the list, you know. It's such a friendly sounding word. It sounds like a nickname. 'Hey, Tits, come here. Tits, meet Toots, Toots, Tits, Tits, Toots.' It sounds like a snack doesn't it? Yes, I know, it is, right. But I don't mean the sexist snack, I mean, New Nabisco Tits. The new Cheese Tits, and Corn Tits and Pizza Tits, Sesame Tits Onion Tits, Tater Tits, Yeah. Betcha can't eat just one. That's true I usually switch off . But I mean that word does not belong on the list.

Actually, none of the words belong on the list, but you can understand why some of them are there. I am not completely insensitive to people's feelings. You know, I can dig why some of those words got on the list...like cocksucker and motherpoo pooer. Those are...those are heavy-weight words. There's a lot going on there, man. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling. They're just busy words. There's a lot of syllables to contend with. And those K's. Those are aggressive sounds, they jump out at you. CocksuckerMotherpoo pooerCocksucker. It's like an assault, on you. So I can dig that.

And we mentioned **** earlier, of course. Two of the other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and Cunt, which go together of course. But forget about that. A little accidental humor there. Piss and Cunt. The reason Piss and Cunt are on the list is that a long time ago certain ladies said 'Those are the two I am not going to say. I don't mind poo poo and ****, but P and C are out. P and C are out.' Which led to such stupid sentences as 'OK, you poo pooers, I am going to tinkle now.'

And of course the word poo poo. The word poo poo, I don't really...well, this is some more accidental humor, but I don't really want to get into that now. Because I think it takes too long. But I do mean that. I mean, I think the word poo poo is an important word. It's the beginning of life, and, yet it's a word we use to hurt one other, quite often. And uh, people much wiser than I have said, I'd rather have my son watch a film with two people making love than two people trying to kill one other. And I of course agree. I wish I know who said it first, and I agree with that. But I would like to take it a step further. I would like to substitute the word poo poo, for the word kill in all those movie cliches we grew up with. 'Okay Sheriff, we're gonna poo poo ya now. But we're gonna poo poo ya slow.' So maybe next year I'll have a whole poo pooin' rap on that word. I hope so.

Uh, there are two-way words, but those are the seven you can never say on television. Under any circumstances you just can not say them ever, ever ever, not even clinically. You can not weave them in the panel with Doc and Ed and Johnny, I mean it's just impossible, forget those seven, they're out.

But, there are some two-way words. There are double-meaning words. Remember the ones your giggled at in sixth grade? 'And the cock crowed three times.''Hey, the cock the cock crowed three times. It's in the bible.' There are some Two-way words, like it's okay for Curt Gowdy [mis-spelled in original transcription. -ed.] to say 'Roberto Clemente has two balls on him.' But he can't say, 'I think he hurt his balls on that play Tony, don't you? He's holding them. He must have hurt them by God.' And the other two-way word that goes with that one is prick. It's okay if it happens to your finger. Yes, you can prick your finger, but don't finger your prick. No, no.

Oh how I wish there was a way to turn it on or off in the personal settings so people who don't like censorship shouldn't have to put up with it...

IMO, if people can't take hearing certain words, it should be up to them to censor their ears - not censor other people's mouths. This is a board for filmmakers. If we're not allowed to be provocative, what use are we?
Seconded:beer:

We go out of our way to defend your right to express yourself artistically here. If you want to have a film that's comprised of entirely four letter words - go for it. If you want to show nudity in your film - go for it. Post nudity in the forums outside of the context of a film or photography work and probably get at least temp banned.

So four letter words in you films, fine ...

But you don't actually have any sort of right to any sort of freedom of expression on a private forum whatsoever. Along the lines of important things to worry about in 2010 getting bent out of shape because the f-bomb auto censored is pretty silly. If you can't discuss films and technical stuff without four letter words, that would suggest a pretty limited / unimaginative vocabulary.

AND you can't say the n-word and all of that other stuff listed above.
You'll get reported, deleted, spoken to and further action will be taken as needed. The f-bomb etc. is just automated. I actually share the George Carlin-esque attitude that f-bombs won't hurt anyone and that there are words which are much worse. But it's about professionalism and not offending members of a community that may not agree with that progressive take.

It depends on context. A racist bad guy using the word where it's clear that using the word is supposed to be a bad thing or homies "owning" that word and using it amongst themselves? Probably OK. Don't quote me on any of this because it's case by case and subject to review by all the mods, but probably OK. For a cheap laugh - not likely. Used as hate speech from the filmmaker - definitely not, that's not even protected speech outside of DVXuser. To intentionally stir the pot - piss everyone off with no good filmmaking, story telling, or artistic goal - probably not.

We've only had to "censor" twice in DVXfest. Once (before I was a mod) a film was thought to just be mocking the whole festival. A big middle finger. That one was pulled. Not sure if I agree with that (and not sure I don't) but it was pulled. The second time, we DQ'ed a film that had a play on a racial slur in the title in. We went round and round about it, erred on the side of allowing it (we don't like censorship per se either) and there was a huge backlash against the filmmakers and a small one against us for allowing it. But the filmmakers did not even stick around to discuss the film in their own thread or the backlash, so after a point it became "if they don't care enough to stick around and defend their film and it's causing an outcry, why should we care?" so we nuked it. It seemed clear they were going for a cheap laugh at best and stirring the pot and pissing everyone off on purpose at worst. Never heard from the filmmakers even about nuking it.

So contex - artistic / narrative, filmmaker's intentions as they express them to us or as best we can discern them, and how the filmmakers handle their own powder keg would all be factors.

So what about a movie with the "n-word." I mean, I'm not working on a movie where they say that or anything, but ...
Coincidentally, yes you are. That word was used in the short that's prominently featured in your banner. And it played in DVXFest. And it did very well, I believe it was a finalist. Not that its success was due to saying that word, obviously, but I think it's rather coincidental that you would say that.

For folks who want to go all non-censored, I could easily create a copy of the live style without any kind of word censoring and allow it to be selectable on an individual user basis. The default still being the poo poo style... But, let us finish the style first, so I'm not constantly having to re-copy the style :)

The only 3 words I know of that ever got censored on dvxuser were the c-bomb (to poo poo) the f-bomb (to poo poo) and **** to shi*.

I added back the poo poo for the f-bomb yesterday thanks to this thread :)

Later,
Jason
