I just fell in love with my DVX100a all over again!

There are 0 reasons to go 4x3 other than having a professional assignment in which a tv commercial or public display screen requires it due to formatting issues. From merely a visual standpoint it's like saying there is an advantage to shooting hd over sd. If you are presented with the choice, why choose the less visually appealing one when all the hollywood movies and tv commercials and the mass of the viewers are loving the upgrade of quality. Those eyes get trained to accept that as professional. To those eyes, 4x3 would look unprofessional. It's about staying ahead of the curve and giving yourself every advantage possible when you try to make this a career for yourself. If it's a recreational thing or a casual video then this doesn't apply to you but if the feature is there, use it to prolong the market value/appeal of your dvx and enhance the impact of your work.

now that every cheap camcorder has a 16/9 ratio, 4/3 is becoming unusual. I like 4/3 a lot. When color appeared on the screens hopefully it was not the end of black & white. it's just creative choices that an artist gets, to make his vision concrete. your argument is a technician argument, not an artist argument. What about "festen"? What about david lynch using a pd150? ..... It's like this shallow DOF race. In 2 years, even my iphone will have some shallow dof i'm sure. maybe i'll be happy to go back to a dvx without any adapter, it will have an unusual look, different from my uncle cheap 1.85 3K camcorder with super shallow DOF. hopefully, interesting artists don't follow this "let's give to the mass what they want" argument. cinema/documentary is about having a vision, a point of view, not having a bigger one ^^

Philip Bloom would not be where he is today if it were not for HD and 16x9.

..... philip who?
well, just kidding, but aparently we don't have the same references. so, sorry to have entered the thread. my mistake. people buying some new hd stuffs and putting them on a tripod in some random places, adding some music is nice, to help others in their choice. i was speaking about cinema ....

Ressurecting DVX100B in HD

Ressurecting DVX100B in HD

Great Thread! I've just made it a belief to shoot in Squeez Mode always from now on. By the way I have a few questions to ask:

Q1. Squeeze mode gives you upraised 16:9 HDV footage. What is the resolution of the footage in PAL/NTSC ?

Q2. If the footage is transformed into HDV via Squeeze mode how am I going to capture it into an NLE (Should I take 16:9 project with what resolution in PAL/NTSC or just interpret the footage with 4:3 NLE project) ?

My Mistake My Humiliation !!!

My Mistake My Humiliation !!!

I've read about the widescreen 16:9 (Squeeze) mode of DVX100 and found out the following:

1. You are not going anywhere from 720x576PAL or 720x480NTSC. The footage will remain in the SD resolution.

2. The DVX100 simply applies letterbox (i.e. cutdown upper/lower 25% footage and apply black-bars) and stretch the remaining footage to fill a 16:9 screen. During this process all the pixels are transformed from 4:3 to 16:9 size.

3. DVX100 gives finest wide-screen when shoot with Anamorphic Lens + 4:3 mode + Progressive + Thin Vertical Detail . Even it is said to not shoot WideScreen with Interlaced mode as it looks crappy.

4. There are technically 3 types of broadcasting standards. SD, ED & HD. Where SD (Standard Definition) is 720i, ED (Enhanced Definition) is 720p and HD (High Definition) is 1080i/p. ED is not known (discarded) as it is just a progressive version of SD.

Now, I have one concern left. The pixels are actually upraised from 4:3 to 16:9. I'm wondering if it is going to change the size of the composition e.g. the subject looks fatty or unrealistic after WideScreening as compared to simple 4:3 :-?

the loss of detail scare is just like Sadam's WMD's.

Wait a minute so loss of detail was sold to other countries before Coalition Forces showed up, even after the Un said many, many, many times "just show us you have no loss of resolution and we will not bother you."

lol!

Yes, and as part of the 1991 cease-fire agreement, U.N. Resolution 687 stated that all instances of resolution loss had to be declared. To enforce the inspections, the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) was granted very strong rights, allowing for its immediate and unrestricted access to any suspected loss of resolution.

I See Wide People :-@

JFEditorIV - The footage uploaded is still very much SD like you said, however it has the "HD" dimensions of 1280x720 if you upload it correctly. Look at my videos in the link below and you be the judge of the stretch effect. It's very much unnoticeable as many others would say.

I went through http://www.vimeo.com/ivstarvideo and saw "Spring Lake" and the woman appears stretched irrationally!

Now I have some other concerns

1. WideScreen/Anamorphic/16:9/Squeeze are all the same beast haunting from four different angles (I previously confused myself between HD and WideScreen) :-?

2. Upraising innocent 4:3 pixel to 16:9 causes some unnoticeable stretches which would then be noticeable after exporting to 1280x720p or in other words further stretching from 720x480/576p to 1280x720p :-?

3. Why can't I just leave my WideScreen/Squeeze footage exported as it is rather than going for extra stretching (Is it still going to look good on a WideScreen LCD/Plasma TV+Web other than radically filling all nooks and crannies of the screen) :-?

4. What impact a square pixel creates rather than rounded pixel (I'm a fan of rounded pixel as it makes you closer to a film-look) :-?

:dankk2:
