Hi
I have bought AG-HMC 154ER camcorder , and i am using edius since a long time
with HDV camcorder but when i started with AVCHD i faced a lot of troubles
the workflow in the timeline in edius is too slow and i have to send each clip and if i made change lige effects or cuts in the clips then i have render once again .....etc. so it will take a lot of time althought it shoud not because we are using SDHC cards so please help me where is the problem if i want to edit 5 minutes movie then i have to wait a lot and to make a lot of renders

by the way my PC specifications are :
Intel Core 2 Duo Quad
CPU 2.4 GHz
Cache 8 MB
Memory 3 Gb
HDD 500 Gb/Sata / 720 rpm
1000 Gb/Sata/7200rpm
PCIe: Geforce 9800GT 512MB
Motherbord : Gigabyte EP45-UD3P

Even though the files from the camera are smaller than the same files from a HDV camera does not mean that they should be easier to edit.

AVCHD is more compressed than HDV is and it looks better than HDV does. It is a much more complex codec that has to be decoded by your computer to be edited.

Truthfully your computer is under powered to handle AVCHD. My computer is similar only slightly more guts. I have a 2.5 GHz Core 2 Quad with 8GBs of RAM and my computer stuters and stamers if I try to do to much to quickly with AVCHD. Espically Multi Cam Edits. I have learned to deal with it or transcode to something else (DVCPRO HD) to edit, or I do a Proxy edit.

Bottom line is if you want to edit Native AVCHD smothly you need to buy a better computer...

EDIUS isn't yet optimized for AVCHD. It will probably become much, much better in version 6 (EDIUS Pro 6). Until then, you pretty much have two choices:

1) use the AVCHD2HQ converter. Convert your files to CanopusHQ, and you'll get very fast realtime performance.

or

2) buy a faster computer. But that's probably an expensive prospect, considering your computer is probably plenty fast enough to handle converted CanopusHQ files, and it will probably be fast enough to support EDIUS 6.

I have an i7 with 12gb and EDIUS 5 still does not like the taste of AVCHD much. I'd recommend converting your files using AVCHD2HQ as Barry suggested or, if you want to edit natively, switch to EDIUS Neo 2.5 with AVCHD Booster. It's can cut through AVCHD like butter. Some features are missing from the full-blown EDIUS package but it may hold you over until they release version 6.

he said he's been using edius for a while...i'm sure downgrading to a consumer version of his NLE won't cut it.

your only real option is to transcode. we pretty much all do it. it's standard operating procedure and well worth the time and investment.

get neoscene or tmpgenc with avid's dnxhd codecs, or just use edius' canopus codecs....or heck, use panasonic's free dvcprohd converter. you have so many options and all of them will give you realtime editing performance.

That would depend on what features of EDIUS 5 you really need. The main things missing in Neo 2.5 are the waveform monitor and some of the output options like AAF. You can easily get the AE bridge and 3D PiP working in Neo by simply by copying the respective filter files out of EDIUS 5 before uninstalling and putting them in the Neo plugins folder.

I second the Neo 2.5 option. It cuts through AVCHD on my Quad Core laptop just like it was converted to HQ on my Core 2 Duo. It will do two PiPs all day with several other filters applied. The biggest things I miss are Title Motion Pro and the Waveform Monitor. I never use Multicam, but if you really rely on Multicam, it is not in Neo 2.5.

Maybe Edius 6 will be out in a few months, but until then Edius Neo 2.5 is a good solution for us, especially for SDEs.

Someone mentioned an EDIUS 5.5 rumor ... any confirmation on that?

I would certainly expect some manner of "booster" functionality to be given to the main EDIUS Pro product; it wouldn't make much sense to have the lower-end Neo able to manhandle AVCHD but the upper-end not. Very much looking forward to seeing this functionality included in EDIUS Pro.

I have no problems when I start with the AVCHD converter, it's automated, just select all your avchd files right click on the converter and go to bed, in the morning they will all be in avi files that play and can be edited with no problems.

Hey, lets hope 5.5 is 10 bit! I love the speed/ease of Edius.

All my avchd files get converted to uncompressed avi's, anyone know how to use canopus hq instead? It would save me a LOT of drive space.

Use the free AVCHD2HQ converter. Double click to open it and you can set the Output format. I suspect that you won't have to worry about converting much longer.
