I got the firmware!

I went to the Canon service centre to get my sensor cleaned and I asked the dude to update the firmware to 2.0.3. He came back with my camera after about 10 minutes and I checked the firmware.... 1.2.4 doh! I went back to the dude and asked again if he could update it to 2.0.3, I told him I'd heard that the service centres have had it since early Feb and that I'm shooting 3 short films this week and really needed 24p bad. He said he'd have a look and took the camera out the back. I sat there like I was waiting for my kid to be born, I had both kids with me which always helps when I need some sympathy. After a couple of minutes the dude came back out with my new digital motion picture camera woohoo! I didn't even need to use the old Jedi mind trick.

So if you have to shoot something before the official release next week get down to your local Canon service centre. If you don't have 2 kids then put on some dark glasses and pretend you're blind.

Congratulations. The exposure simulation mode always had a live histogram but can you confirm that there is now a live histogram in movie display mode? Maybe post a photo? Thanks.

Despicable exploitation of young children for selfish purposes.

The only way to atone for this sinful behavior is to share the firmware with us.

I just exploited them some more and shot a film in 25p with my iscorama.....cinemascope! I'll cut it and put it on vimeo later this week.

I'll check on the histogram.

Yep it's live but only appears in live view, it disappears when I hit record.

The manual audio level meter doesn't display in live view or record mode, what's with that? There's a level meter in the menu screen that appears when you select the manual record controls.

Keep in mind I don't have a manual nor would I read one if I did and I've only been messing with the firmware for a few minutes. I might discover how to use it in time.

oh god the nearest service center is 400 miles away...

I remember hearing that the new firmware doesn't display the audio level meter in record mode..

Hopefully Tramm can fix that if Canon haven't left any booby traps for him. It's kinda annoying that aside from the frame rates and manual record levels this update is less functional than magic lantern. Perhaps Canon are going to tease us with another update.

Any service centers near San Francisco? Shooting a HUUUGE project this Saturday and Sunday.

do they charge you

do they charge you

at the service center to install it? if so how much, thanks.

Sounds like external audio is were the live levels need to adjusted.

At least the AGC is gone and you can set a safe level before recording.

Still a bit questionable how the "live" histogram and audio levels do not show during recording. Not a lot of help to the video crowd?

You see, you did it right when I suggested you shouldn't trade-in your kids for the next ENG camera ;-)

Not sure about the HDMI out yet I'll try it tonight, I'm shooting a short all day.

The codec averages about 47Mbps @ 25fps which is nice. My first impression is that the picture is cleaner but I've only shot about 30min of footage in daylight so nothing conclusive yet. I'll have a better idea after I review today's footage.

upgrade was free, sensor cleaning was $50.
