I don't know if it will be a good move

so I have presently a 7D. i'm the only one in my friend with a 7D and they all have Magic Lantern. So my big question is: do I need to change my 7D for a 60D. I want to know if this will be a good move. I don't use an external monitor so the 1080p output it not necessary and the articulate screen too. I didn't try ML alot and i don't really know if that will be a good thing.

thanks

whut?

7D doesn't have magic lantern, so i'm a bit confused of your question. I'll take a stab though.. The video are the same coming from either, so its up to you if ML is worth the "downgrade".

Kastro, I think he was saying that he was the only one amongst his friends who has a 7d, and that his friends all have magic lantern.

The video should be the same in theory because they (apparently) use the same sensor, but the 7D will do better in low light.

jsoucy, you have make a decision based on your own needs in light of the differences. Do you need weather proofing? Do you need the extra stills oriented features of the 7D? Do you need the very best low light performance you can get?

Generally though, there are many testimonies you can find here and elsewhere from people who use their cameras professionally, stating that ML has been invaluable. Why not download the manual and read through it? It will tell you exactly what you gain with ML.

not even better in low light: the video is the same, you'll have to pixel-peep really hard to find any differences - it's basically ML and swivel screen vs. HDMI out and weather resistant magnessium body

Trust you Norman to have the truth every time :)

I would never change for ML. I've used the 7d in situations where cheaper cameras would explode with rain and dust.

Do you know that for a fact ? :)

I've used a T3i for almost a year now in blizzards, pouring rain and dry powder dust. It's still working perfectly.

I would sell that 7d in two seconds and pick up a T3i on after Christmas sale and then you'll have money left over to buy the next best thing when it comes out as well. This game is changing so fast these days that being married to a camera body is rather foolish.

As for the value of ML, it's a very good tool. Focus peaking alone is worth the switch IMHO. The ability to hit critical focus on the fly is orders of magnitude higher with ML. Exposure alternatives are nearly as valuable.

To me this it's a no brainer. Sell that thing before the next wave of cams comes out and it's value goes down even more.

Cheers,
Pete

that is definitely not true, and there are plenty of proofs in these forums; I'm just a newbie with a lot of time in my hands
but this time I think I'm right: I have never seen image quality differences between the 7D and its more modest brothers

I would gladly go for a 60D instead of a 7D if they cost the same, just because of magic lantern: custom cropmarks, zebras, live histogram, and focus aids (zoom-in while recording) are essential to me now
but I'd be terrified of shooting in the rain, or in a sandy beach or desert

You may not want to hear this, but if you can't shoot good films with your 7D, switching to a 60D with magic lantern is not going to make that big a difference. The 7D is a great tool in the right hands, as is any camera. Rather than concentrating on the tool, try to concentrate on the film making.

Good Luck!

I have the T3i, 7D and the 1Ds and 1Dm2, and I have no problems using the T3i in rain, snow, dust, sand etc. Many of my lenses on the other hand, wouldn't handle it so well.

But I would also be terrified of shooting in the rain, or in a sandy beach or desert with my lenses.:Drogar-Sick(DBG):

Most of the "L" series lenses with a properly fitting UV filter "complete" weather sealing on the 7D, 5D MkII, and 1D MkIV. I've had my 7D with EF 17-40mm f4L out shooting in the rain several times and the last heavy snowfall we had I was out in that too.

I kept a towel in the pickup and would blot it off before driving to the next location. I've seen a video of a guy rinsing off his 7D with "L" series lens under the faucet in his kitchen sink.

I don't have the guts to do that!
