I dont get it

Not sure how strongly it relates but when I was at Philip Bloom's reader meetup in San Rafael last week one other person and I had GH1s and the other 40 or so people were using Canon SLRs or prosumer video cameras. I know I got a ton of attention for my GH1; people were really curious about it....there's something to be said for standing out in a crowd. In any case, people who were shooting on the canon's were really impressed with some of the features, particularly the articulated LCD, the live viewfinder, and the videocameraesque onscreen control (over ISO change, etc.)

However, the thing I got the most questions about, and thing the Canon folks seemed most blown away by, was the unlimited (only limited by card size) recording time, with no overheating or FAT32 4gb (splits the file) limitation. Many people were expressing frustration as to how they couldn't use their SLRs for events, or for some interview work, or for wide "safe" shots at weddings, etc, and were amazed that the little GH1, designed from the ground up for live view, could.

Coming up, stay tuned, my friend and I are (tomorrow) shooting a montage video that will cut together 5D, GH1, and (weather permitting as it will probably rain and the rig is a pain) HVX-200 with Letus extreme.

That's nice to hear. I think I'll take my GH1 and some Leica M glass to the L.A. meet-up...should stand out a bit...

Mine stood out at the Bloom San Rafael meetup. Got a lot of questions.

Here is a video we just did with shots from the GH1, the 5D, and the HVX!

Very nice video.

I was torn between the GH1 & the 7D for a long time. I ended up getting the GH1 first and I have been using a friends 7D. The GH1 pulldown and codec issue does suck but you can work around it, and when you are careful and move properly on a tripod made of angel hair, I think it's 1080p footage is better than the 7Ds.

The 7D codec though is better and you don't have to be as careful... I think the colors are very hyped.. but some people like that look. It also, plain fact of the matter is what professionals will want if you are being paid to do someone's film, commercial, or project. The 7D has somehow gotten the reputation of being the 'baby red' camera and shoot it on that and no one will know. Most people can't touch the red because of budget so of course they want to believe this.

If you can get gigs, I say have both cameras. They are cheap enough now. GH1 is better for interview and longer form stuff and it the kit lens has some great autofocus for certain even things. The 7D ha a better codec, it's 1080 24p correctly right off the bat without any weirdness, and people know the name more.

You can do magic with both of them. I think Panasonic did intentially drag it's feet a bit because of hvx200 and dvx sales.

I don't like the gh1 as a still camera at all... it urks me.. in that area the 7D smashes it with a mallet.
